I've been hearing rumours of a remake. I'm wondering whether or not this is a good thing.

I'm watching Carrie at the moment, and honestly, other than a few sound effects it's dated relatively well, all things considered. It's still haunting and horrifying and effective, it's incredibly acted and I guess maybe the visual style could be updated a bit but it doesn't make much of a difference.

But goddamn, those few sound effects really get under my skin and so far on the occasions they've been used (I'm talking mostly about the shrieky Psycho-style stabby sound effect that's used in a couple scenes) it's kinda ruined it for me.

I think, if done right, an update could be absolutely fantastic.. but it'd be awful hard to do better than Sissy Spacek for the lead role.

    Thoughts?

There has been a remake/sequel miniseries which was pretty decent. I find the original horribly dated with some of the cheesiest scenes of any horror film I have seen. That said it's still a classic but one which is very much defined by the period it was made.

Carrie was my first exposure to Stephen King so it wil always have a special place for me in horror cinema.I really like the movie and think that Spacek's performance is exceptional as the alienated central character is incredibly moving.Personally i think a remake would be a disaster for a couple of reasons, the main one being the main performance and that of her mother.I feel that the roles would be played far too easily as ham fests.Part of Spaceks appeal in the role is because that she isnt a traditionally attractive lead actress.I can envision an airbrushed beauty a la the "hot ugly chick" from Not Another Teen Movie,it just wouldnt work for me.The other reason why i dont think it would work is that the scenes when Carrie begins to explore her powers we will be subjected to craploads of CGI rubbish, likewise with the climactic scene. No thanks.

The remake was pretty decent, especially the ending....it was a tv movie/pilot for a potential series, but never got picked up. I liked the remake better.

In King's novella, Carrie was a slightly chubby, awkward character, as opposed to the mousy, thin, delicate Spacek.

Although I did prefer the movie ending
Carrie dying in the house, which then collapses, etc
    to the book ending
Carrie dying in Sue's arms after talking to her telepathically (I think)

Generally I'm pretty skeptical about remakes, and I'm a bit worried that it would end up as some sort of Jennifer's Body/Prom Night/teen horror.

I can kind of picture Amanda Seyfried in the role. She sort of has the timid look, but, then it will just turn out like one of the teen horror movies I am worried about.

So, all in all, I would rather it was left alone. "If it ain't broke..." and all that :P

I know this is an old thread, but ... looks like the remake is on, according to the Hollywood Reporter. No news of a director, but they have writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who adapted The Stand, on board. If he gets this wrong ... they're all going to laugh at him ...

I love the original, the ma is a total head case. I don’t think it’s aged badly, the book is well worth the read. Dirty pillows.

There are so many great King stories that deserve a proper big screen adaption / revamp but Carrie would not have been top of that list for me, it's a classic creepy 70's horror and at least it was a proper Hollywood production unlike all the dreadful TV movie adaptations over the years.
Love the see Salem’s Lot, IT and the Stand done again and properly. The latter two have been rumoured for a while now
Dark Tower as well of course.

Good casting with Chloë Moretz and Julianne Moore

Moretz should be good alright, she's a very talented young actor and at 15 is a lot closer to King's original vision of Carrie, who was 16 in the book where as Sissy Spacek was 27 playing her.

I think this looks great, but in the usual fashion, they've put the ENTIRE film in the trailer. Yes, it's a remake (from a source novel), but there will be those out there who have not seen the original. I know the blood-soaked Carrie is an iconic image and is a key part of the marketing of the movie, but I think this plays more like a synopsis than a trailer. However, Chloe Grace Moretz is pretty much perfect casting, and Julianne is always reliable.

Llooks decent. Long time since I watched the original, does Carrie become that aware of her powers in it?

    I'm quite excited about this.

I have mixed feelings about the original. I remember being really upset by it, which I suppose is credit to Spacek for her performance. It's quite hard to play that timid mousey character and be sympathetic at the same time. There are lots of other versions of that character in films that I find annoying and root for the bullies. (don't judge me :p )
Watching the new trailer I think Moretz may have managed it too. I suppose it's a good thing, you're supposed to sympathise with the main character and be glad when it all kicks off after prom.

I agree with delbertgrady, they've put the entire film in the trailer. I know a lot of people have seen the original, or seen it parodied in any number of movies or TV shows, but they've really left nothing as a surprise here. I guess they're going for big blockbuster advertising here.

Shame it's not out until November :(

I must be the only one who doesnt like Moretz. I think shes a bit miscast in this too, shes meant to be a nerdy, shy bullied teenager but she looks prettier than the bitchy girls in the trailer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Glad I watched that trailer, now I don't need to go to the cinema to see it!

Sissy Spacek was just as pretty in the original and also 27 years old.

I don't think it's stated explicitly in the book that Carrie is an outcast because of her looks. It's more because of her weird behaviour and lack of social skills. I'm not sure I like Chloe Moretz either though.

Anyway, the trailer is terrible. Give away pretty much the entire plot in 2 and half minutes. Terrible marketing.

well it only really gives the whole thing away if you've seen the first version, which brings me to my first point - it looks almost like a carbon copy of the de palma film. and secondly, regarding the miscasting, where in the name of god are they going vis-a-vis carrie's mother being a milf?

so it isn't looking great but i'm hopeful they up the level of destruction to be a bit more in line with the book, perhaps without the stupid final scene

This movie looks loud and obnoxious and has eff all subtlety going for it. Effects wise it seems to have more in common with a sci-fi movie than a horror movie.

Looks reasonably pretty to me :P Certainly easy on the eye enough not to warrant being bullied (and there is other pictures from the movie where she looks better than that tbf), but then as someone said the bullying isn't because of her looks. I still thing Spacek was more miscast than Moretz due to her age though.

No I know she wasnt bullied because of her looks, just that its hard to see past how pretty Moretz is in the trailer. Spacek was (sorry) but creepy looking and as for her age, Travolta was only a couple of years younger than her. All teenagers in those 70's horror movies looked old!

The trailer looks like it was made by the people who write the For Dummies books-Carrie For Dummies, it just shows everything.

    dear gods that trailrs appalling

ruining a film in the trailer is practiacally a trope now but that one just takes the buscuit.

the teaser did a better job of engendering interest IMO where as this just ruins the film for those that havent seen the original.

ill probably check it out as ive always enjoyed the story and theres alway hope theyll flesh it out a bit so theres some new stuff for us oldie to enjoy.

TBH if anything it makes me wish for a firestarter remake.

    :D

I didn't think that trailer ruined to much at all, if you at the old Trailers. , Both of those show a lot of the movie as well, this dose look better then TV one.

    (1976)

    (2002)

I now give this new trailer a go.

New TV spot for the 2013 remake: spoilerific, but I presume they assume everyone knows the story by now ...

(I didn't know Judy Greer was in it too - one of the top character actresses working today, in my opinion, so that's a plus.)

    it was effectively a remake.

Is there such a thing as an original idea anymore?
