Does society depend too much on the Internet?

Following on from the web use thread and the "what happened to society" thread, do you think society, not necessarily just Irish society, but also other modern countries with a similar or higher level of technology, depends on the World Wide Web too much as a medium for information?

Yes hence why it is important to protect the internet and keep net neutrality.

Some do, just look at South Korea users!

Then again, some should spend more time on the net and get educated more!

Wasn't Obama trying to censor the net?

on the other hand, you have regimes like China who have an "internet police" tasked with monitoring citizen's web use, very Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Whatever you do don't type "google" into google or you could break the internet.

We don't depend on it too much, its just so bloody useful that to not use it as much as we do would be a step backwards.

Sure look at some threads we have on boards

"What time does the swimming pool open?"
"Are the buses on the route hourly?"

Get your golden pages which you received for free and you can get an answer to your question far, far faster then asking here.

But people still do it
Maybe they start threads just for the interaction

It's using the internet for information when a 30 second phone call would get you the information you need

Now if you want recommendations and advice then the internet is brilliant for this.
But realy, checking internet forums is not how you get a speedy answer to a simple question

    No.

The internet is having a massive positive impact in society. The speed at which ideas can spread is phenomenal and the potential for the rational exchange of ideas (rather than ego-driven debates) is waaay higher than irl.
Maybe it's just as I'm growing older, but i just can't see how i would have been anywhere near as enlightened a person had the internet not existed.

Even stuff like the potential for misinformation on wikipedia has an upside in that it gets people to question what they're reading rather than swallowing it whole.

Society needs moar internet!!! For too many people internet=email+facebook and that's it :(.

What is this "society" you speak of?
Is this one of those old fashioned things that exists outside of the internet?
