Option 5 - swap it with one of the full beam bulbs and replace in the morning.

I know you said " you have no way of getting a bulb to replace it", but I wouldn't be out and about with both full beams gone either.

Given the numbers of people doing it, I always thought that it was compulsory to drive in Ireland with only one working headlamp bulb?

We should be like France and make it compulsory to carry spare bulbs at all times. Make it part of the NCT so people will at least have them in the car once every 2 years.

I always carry spares but if I wasn't in my car and noticed one light was blown I'd do what everyone else does and drive on. Then replace it befor the NCT;)

Spare bulbs are handy in many cases but in some fail.

    1. Driver has no clue how to change a blub (I'd say it would be way over 50% of drivers).
    2. It's impossible to change a bulb without proper equipment of unmounting few elements of the car (like bumper, battery, etc). Even if someone would have equipment and be willing to do it, it's almost impossible on rainy night. That can be a case with some of the cars.
    3. Car has a Xenon lights and chaning the bulb there has to be done by a trained mechanic.

I voted for option with fog lights, as it's the safer one. At least people will be able to see you. If you don't have fog lights, you can always try to adjust lights as low as possible and put the head lamps. You might be lucky that they will go that low, that they won't dazzle oncoming drivers.

What I have seen a lot is main light out on one side and front fog out on the other, so the driver puts on dipped beams and foglights to get two headlights.
And I'm not making light of the issue...

Ah sure the fogs are grand they'll see you home :pac: *vanishes*.

Id probably drive on, provided Im not going a couple of hundred miles. Worst case scenario most petrol stations sell bulbs so if its anything more than a trip home then youre not that far from a replacement.

If it is the outside bulb that has blown Id consider swapping it with the inside one, so at least the one bulb I have is the safer one.

Funny coincidence; i changed my bulbs today and had to partially remove the bumper on the left side to remove the light to remove the bulb, and then put it all back together. The right side was easier but there was a strategically placed loom of wiring that was clipped to the chassis and further prevented from getting out of the way by a metal tab, which i bent back to unclip the wires and shift them enough out of the way to change the bulb, after i removed a small fuse box so i could see a little better into the headlight from the rear.

    In the rain, with tools.

So if i were on the road when a bulb blew, i'd keep going and fix it when i got home. Non technical minded people will have to call the AA though as they will not have a hope of replacing the lights these days.
    Which is a disgrace really.

Volvo is, as afar as i know, the only manufacturer that has easily removeable headlights. One easily visible clip and the whole headlight slides out. The connecting wires are even long enough!

Sure, it's even easier in other cars where you don't need to pull out the unit at all - you can very easily change a bulb after lifting the bonnet. I do remember it being a pain in the bum changing the bulbs on my Alfa 156 though.

Just happened last night with heavy rain & driving back roads. Right dipped. I carry spares so i pulled into the first petrol station when i got to town & changed it. Still though, some hairy moments on bad bends with mad rain & cars coming the opposite way.

I carry a spare actually. My last car had xenons so it wasnt a problem.

Thinking outside the box there. I like it!

Personally, I always carry a full set of spare bulbs.

Change it two clips removes back panel of light bulb housing bobs you're uncle although its 1.2 Ibiza so theres plenty of room in the Engine Bay.

Failing that fog lights to the Nearest Garage.

I'd replace both blubs the next morning, if you dont change both togeather there is a good chance the older one will blow a few days afterwards.
