Not sure if it been posted before but I found this site on the history of Swords. Reading it is like taking a walk around the town 100 years ago, it's really interesting.

Seriously - A poster starts a thread about the history of Swords & by the 3rd post we are onto childhood obesity. Incredible!

Posts deleted - stay on topic.

I presume that'll be the same Savage family who now run Londis and JCs?

I'd say so, they also had a Grocers, Veg shop and Sweet Shop back then
    Shops In Swords 1900

O'Tooles, at the Turnpike, at the entrance to the town, Dublin Street. [Lord Mayers]
John Glasgow, Main Street. Foleys [The Star].
Weldons, Tyrells in front of the old Castle [ Ryans Pub].
    Earleys Hotel, Main Street
A picturesque thatched two storey house, MClouds. The Hawthorn
Taylors Big Tree house in North Street.
Byrnes, in the Pound, adjacent to the Green.
    Grocers
Mags Weldon, Colemans, MacGowans, Savages, Foleys, McDonnels, Tiernans.

    Sweet Shops
Kellys, O'Neills, Savages, Ryans, Mag Murphy

    Vegetable Shops
    Savages, McDermots

    Coal Merchants
    Connors, McDermots

    Drapery & Hardware
    Phillips, Cloney, Knowde

    Butchers
    Howards, Lawless, Sherry

    Milk Suppliers
    Weldons, Duffs, Conners, P. Early

Also the Taylors owned The Big Tree till about 10 years ago, they own The Lamb now and I think The Star too.

I'm sure this was covered in depth at the time, but it's amazing that the FCC headquarters were built in the town park...

The very people who are supposed to be planning for the best quality of life for citizens in their area put their HQ in the middle of the town park, eliminating the little green space that there is in the centre of Swords. The irony.

    Continue, back on topic please:D
