Hey, any geologists post here. I’m in fifth year and want to be a geologist. Are there many jobs in Ireland, or will I have to go overseas? What do most geologists end up doing once there qualified and whats the pay like?

It depends what type of geologist you want to be, there are different specialisations. Most people would either continue into postgraduate studies in the area of their choice, or would get jobs in mining/exploration/oil companies. There are jobs in Ireland - companies like Teck Cominco, Tara Mines and Tullow Oil hire geology graduates. There are also opportunities abroad especially in Canada, Australia and parts of Africa. Once again, it depends on what exactly you want to do eg. if you want to study volcanoes, obviously there are no active volcanoes in Ireland, but you could work in a university here and travel a lot.
As for the availability of jobs, it is a hard one to predict because it depends on the economy of course, since you've just started fifth year that means you've nearly two years left of school and then three/four years to do a degree, and a lot could change with the economy in that time. The best advice I can give is to do what you find interesting, if you are interested in what you are studying then you are more likely to do well and that will make you more attractive to employers

Thanks, one of the girls on the UCD forum said they have the best geology course in Ireland. Much better then TCD and UCC. But I hear UCC is also very good. Do you know which is the best?

I is a while back since I graduated in Geology. I did very much enjoy the course, but of my class of 12, about 50% kept on Geology(mostly academic) whilst the rest did conversion courses to other subjects.
