Just spent the last hour going through anything and everything it could possibly be and the phone still wont come out of "Recovery" mode.

It extracts the update, install it, then hangs on "Restoring iPhone firmware..." for a while before I get an error (code 9).

I've run the network and connectivity diagnostics, both show no issues. Anyone any idea what I can do to fix it before having to resort to Apple, or...3 (shudder)

Turn off the iPhone (you can hold down the Sleep button, or use Sleep + Home, and release as soon as the screen shuts off).
Hold down the Home button while connecting to your computer with iTunes already open and ready for a connection.
iTunes will prompt you to perform a software restore.
Your iPhone will obviously be wiped new and be reset as a result and you wil have a working iPhone again.

Thanks for the help, the problem is the iPhone was stuck in that restore mode and wouldn't do anything else.

I managed to get it sorted (after 3 hours) and a full iTunes reinstall, fresh firmware download, Temp folder deletion, etc...

Must have been something to do with the iTunes 10 update and wanting 4.0.2 at the same time. Something corrupted along the way. Apprecate the help though, thanks.

I used this method before, once for an upgrade and a 2nd time for a downgrade and worked fine.
