If I ever do a course and there is a "wan" there their is almost literally a 50 percent chance of them saying I want to be a hairdresser.

    Why is this?

They have to make do with hairdressing as we do not have the same demand as England has for WAGs.

How is "common" defined? Would an inability to distinguish between there and their be part of it?

WAGs stands for Wives and Girlfriends. The way you used it makes no sense. You're saying they want to be "wife and girlfriend"?

Get your sh*t together before you try to be smug with abbreviations.

Because you don't really need any smarts of good schooling to be a hairdresser do you, so for many it's the only viable option. The pay is awful though. If not hairdresser they do some kind of beautician course, these commoners.

If it was changed to Wives Or Girlfriends, it would be better, but the people using it would be considered racist.:o

Jeez, I know that. I heard a bunch of inner city kids being interviewed and some of them wanted to be pro footballers, hairdressers, pilots and one girl said she wanted to be a WAG.

And why are the ugliest girls in the world the ones who want to go into 'beauty'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,070 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

Why not? It's not a terribly low paying job once you're qualified.. and most of them do work on their own time too.. There's not many other occupations (where a high level of education isn't required) which gives you as good a prospect of being able to set up your own business after a few years either

    What's the singular of WAGs?

If one girl aspires to Wagdom, she can't be 'girlfriends' plural. I deem his use of the term to be correct.

On topic: the OP is making a sweeping generalisation.... BUT.... any female hairdresser or barber I've ever been to had fake tan, a common accent, black trousers, died blonde hair, and caked on make-up. I can think of 5 specific examples, with no exceptions! :/

I made a special point of not mentioning that particular point. I also didn't want to mention, for fear of offending anyone, that most of them also weigh about 20 stone.:o

Haven't seen it that way myself - I've been a customer at lots and lots of salons over the years, and all different "kinds" of people work as hairdressers (all different looks, colouring, accents - lol at the snooty term "common" btw). Was considering doing it myself but the money for a trainee is just too atrocious if you're a few years older than just out of school.

Well I suppose it's good if you're into common young ones with fake tan & too much make-up...

Hairdressing is good honest work and is a trade which takes years to learn, the same as many construction trades. The difference is, hairdressers are still in work these days.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with black trousers, or any of the other traits I mentioned for that matter. I merely pointed out that every female hairdresser or barber I've ever encountered has had all of these traits, without exception.
