I'm not really up on all this stuff so excuse my ignorance but,
I got a TV from DID for the bedroom and it has a built in digital tuner for freeview.
Have no cable in the bedroom just an arial and get the analogue channels ok but the digital ones are there, I just can't view them.
Does this mean this TV is no good for Irish Freeview or is the service just not up and running here yet? (the digital radio channels are ok).

You got conned, the UK DTT service (aka Freeview) uses MPEG-2 for the video, the Irish DTT service (aka SaorView) is the more recent/modern MPEG-4, so Freeview no use for Ireland. Freeview HD would be ok, but not many sets out yet.

    So you get Audio only.

If you are buying a DTT Telly, you need to look for the TNT-HD (the HD important) logo. TNT-HD (but not TNT) is MPEG-4.

Last time i was in DID, they tried to convince me that TNT-HD would not work in Ireland, but Freeview would...

Dam, Thanks Gerard, should have made sure it would work first.
Grasping at straws here but there is a USB port on the TV, could I somehow update the Firmware to MPEG-4?

It needs a hardware upgrade. Some (if they have a CAM slot) will take an expansion card to provide MPEG-4...

Bring it back. Any shops selling non compliant televisions should be receiving heavy fines.

The "CAM"s will never support Saorview when it starts properly. There is NO conversion route at all other than a Set-box.

The actual PCB, chips are different for MPEG4. There is no upgrade possible.
