I haven't bought any high street clothes in forever, and that is really weird for me because I'm always buying clothes. I just haven't gone into a shop and said omg thats gorgeous in months. Between florals, pastels, fur, denim and leather I don't like any of the trends that have been around the last year. Am I just too miserable to appreciate the nice stuff or has everything just got less nice?

I used to have a severe shopping problem, as in I would walk into a shop, usually Topshop or Urban Outfitters, and pick up everything I liked, hand over my card and pray for it to work. I could spend a few hundred euro in half an hour. But I can't shop anymore, mostly cause there is nothing I like in the shops! Topshop the other day was just full of leather and fur, but horrible stuff! I walked the whole of Dublin and bought like 3 things. And my friends were the same

I'd have to agree. I really can't find anything I like at the moment, which is really frustrating.

The high street has been producing some awful styles lately most notably the dishcloth floral look. Floral dresses etc can look great but it is so OTT at the moment. Judging by the catwalk (where the high street takes inspiration) Autumn/Winter should be a vast improvement.

The stuff going into the shops right now is gorgeous imo

But I've always been a sucker for feminine/military stuff

    I'm the same OP.

I've bought a few bits lately, but not much.

Everything seems to be low-cut, but as I am flat-chested (32A/32AA) it doesn't look right on me.

I'd definitely agree with you there, OP. There's very little I like in the shops at the moment. I thought I liked the military style clothing, but I haven't seen anything in the shops that I like at the moment. I think the last item of clothing I bought was a pair of jeans, and that was early in the summer!

And speaking of jeans, I went to buy a pair of jeans last week and was really disappointed with the choice out there. It seems that you can have any pair of jeans you want, as long as they're skinny fit or kind of slouchy. Nothing in between. Even the choice in A-wear was remarkably poor - there were no 'normal' denim colour jeans anywhere - all were a greeny/browny denim colour, which I hate. :(

Where are the clothes for normal people?
I've seen very few people who look better in skinny jeans than they would in a pair of fitted bootcut jeans.
Leggings - ok for wearing under a dress or long top. Not ok on their own, that's way too much of a rear view for me.
Long tops - not good if you've got any bit of a belly, they just cling to any bulges (not that I want belly tops either, just something that stops at a decent length.

I don't remember ever seeing so much on the sale rails before. I know there's a recession, but I really do think that a lot of it's down to so many styles just being unflattering and unwearable.

I actually don't know who they're designing for, considering the average height in Ireland and UK is around 5'4, things (ie long tops, wouldn't mind them but you can't get normal length ones) are so huge. Its nearly impossible to get things vaguely in proportion for petite people who really are your average person. The styles themselves aren't made for people with actual curves, nor are they made for people who are more boyish.

I noticed that too, the River Island sale was huge and went on forever. They just couldn't get rid of the stuff. I love military stuff too but none of the stuff in the shops is getting it right.

It's as if the designers have forgotten that the majority of people are not the same height nor shape as the models who wear the clothes on the catwalks or for photo shoots. I think they really need to take all shapes, sizes and heights into consideration when they design their clothes. There's nothing stopping them designing for everybody.

I remember hearing an interview with Twink a year or so ago, and she went into BTs to buy a dress, and said that the sizes there were so miniscule, that the size 16 dress she tried on was, in reality, around a size 12. Her belief was that designers made the sizes so small because they didn't want 'curvier' people wearing them because they wouldn't look as good on them as they would on a size 6, six foot tall model.

To me, it's a bad designer who can't design clothes to fit all shapes and sizes. As most fashion shows, such as Trinny and Susannah, Gok Wong, or even the American What Not to Wear, highlight, there are different shaped clothes which suit all shapes and sizes; designers should know this and design accordingly. Moreover, clothes which flatter 'normal' or 'curvier' women would not only show off the clothes better, but would also draw attention towards that designer because the consumer knows that a particular designer's clothes would suit the consumer's bodyshape.

Last week I cleaned out my wardrobe and got rid of everything I haven't worn in years. I was left with a half-empty wardrobe so I need to re-stock, and I can't find a bloody thing I want.

Decent jeans, day dresses, skirts that aren't the same length as a large belt all seem to have become extinct! I've foud some things in charity shops lately but no traditional wardrobe staples. Ugh.

And why can designers not deal with people having boobs? It's so hard to get smart clothes to fit anything over a C cup. Shirts are completely out for me because I'd need them 2 sizes bigger in the bust. Oasis are one of the worst in the last few years, I try on tops in there and they fit on the lower torso but cut off circulation to my chest! Jumpers/cardigans etc are ok to find but I'm so so sick of trying on lovely tops and they just don't go near fitting in the chest. Shops must be losing out on so much money because they cater for such a small range of sizes and fits.

^ I wish I could thank that more than once. I'm having a nightmare trying to find some smart shirts at the moment. It's SO hard to find a nice shirt that doesn't gape horribly, and I'm not even that big! (34DD/size 12)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭E.T.

I'm 14-16 (depending on fit of top), you'd think they'd realise people my size will more than likely have boobs! I tried on a top somewhere (think it was Oasis!) last year and I'd have been arrested for indecent exposure if I wore it out!

Boobs and hips. It's like everything is designed for a straight up straight down person.
Any trousers fitting will invariably be too big at the waist to get over the hips
As for boobs, wearing a cami and half-open blouse is a good compromise, but not in the summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭Seb_bixby

I'm loving this thread!! I too suffer from not being able to find things to fit me right in the exact ways described above, to loose on the waist to fit my legs or not fitting on the bust.
One would wonder if it is a sign of the times when most clothes are designed to fit skinny waife like figures.

I wear nearly everything that I have now with a belt! Have also taken to shopping in the charity shops and have found some great things! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Oh I remembered something that's been pissing me off for months - why are all skirts so short now?!

I do not want to wear a belt around my hips, I want a nice knee length skirt. Why is this so hard for shops to get their heads around?

Dresses are all sneaking up as well.

Also decent jeans have disappeared as of late, I'm stuck wearing the same few dresses over and over with different cardigans and shoes.

Wow, thinking about it, the shops do suck at the moment! I like the general style but the fits and silhouettes are just dreadful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭E.T.

phasers I think you hit the nail on the head - I like so much of the general styles but the fit is so crap! I'm wearing skirts and tops I bought up to 5 years ago and I get loads of compliments because there's nothing as flattering as them around now. Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned flattering.

I thought it was just me losing my mojo!

I love most of the trends for A/W but so far none of the high street shops have got it right. Everything feels a bit 'off'

I found the new stuff in River Island very exciting, which is odd because I always found it such a trashy, tasteless shop before. Lots of smock type tops and huge sleeves and cool farbrics. Anyone seen the amazing Adam Ant style sheer blouse in there? WANT.
I am SICK of this floral trend, its so over done. An these damn work boot type things, FFS buy a pair of proper Doc Martens...

Any way, I was cheered up by River Islands new stuff...I actually wanted to buy something for once!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭Ditzie

other than river island, which has lovely slouchy cardigans/blazers now, every other shop I've walked into is crap! It's tops that are driving me mad atm, they're all so clingy! I'm not big (size 10) but I have a bit of a belly and prefer not to eccentuate it so why can't shops get this? Bought a size 12 t-shirt in penneys to have it slightly baggy but it was still clingy! ended up buying size 16 t-shirts and vests as when I bought the 14 they were still clingy! It's made me feel so bad and self-conscious! So yeah rant over :P

I bought 2 dresses....2 the entire summer from Penneys and Dunnes. Id be a 16 and am tall so its a feckin nightmare trying to get stuff thats in proportion. Next were good..but this summer they were awful. I agree..huge amount of sale stock on the racks which i still wouldnt buy.

I know its impossible for all shops to cater for every single size but its not hard to understand the concept that we need space for boobs!!Hello like..theyre not a new invention :D

  • I agree. I haven't found anything I even liked, let alone loved, in months. I hate the patterns and most of all I hate the cuts. I'm looking for a plain black dress, but every single one I find is either short enough to be a top, has huge batwing sleeves or looks like a potato sack. I see so much stuff that would be nice, if it wasn't for that 'little' detail which ruined it.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm currently looking for a plain black pencil skirt, but after months of searching I still haven't found one that would be suitable for interviews. Most of the skirts out there have detail, or are ribbed, or just don't fit. Moreover, designers seem to forget that there are girls out there who are not 5'6"+, and hence are mid calf length or longer on those of us who are around 5'3" or 5'4". And worse still, the style is set in such a way that it's impossible to take up the hem.

I'm a size 12/14 and my boob size is 38DD and I cant find ANYTHING, most times i'll have to try on even a size 18 whch sometimes doesnt even reach over my boobs! It'll be baggy all over yet tight around my boobs, drives me crazy and my self esteem feels crap after too,my mind just thinks that i'm to big when in realilty clothes I bought about a year ago fit around my boobs perfectly! aaah!

    I agree 100%.

I am 5'5 and while I am not tall, any skirts I see would barely cover my rear-end. I would need to wear leggings/tights with them, even then, there's a chance I'd be arrested for indecent exposure.

So it's not just me?:o....... THANK GOD! :D

I have't bought a single thing since....Jan...wow. I find it impossible to find anything 'nice', and I've definately noticed tht shops are trying to cut costs.

Materials are noticabley cheaper, and it's clear that jobs have been lost in the HQ's of them as well as Q.C seems to have gone out the window.

I find it impossible to find anything that hasn't got every type of embellishment bar the kitchen sink attached. I think possiblely buyers have been replaced with unqualified (ie. cheap) ppl.

But maybe I've just not able to appreicate the trends these days.

I agree with fits being impossible as well! I know that brands did alter the definitions of the sides to increase moral and therefore spending. {they made them bigger, Monroe was a size 12 but not the 12 we know today, as anyone who wears vintage will know:rolleyes:.} But nowadays it's become ridiculous.

I still am yet to find jeans that fit, my 'newest' jeans are four yrs old!! I can not be the only woman with large thighs and no bum!

I only hope tht the trends for autumn/winter on the cat walks arrive on the high street soon! and in sizes that fit!

I may even write to santa, I'm tht desperate!

yeah I am liking some stuff in RI, normally I definitely wouldn't. and I bought a size 16 plain long sleeved top in penneys the other day and it fits just right! maybe it's just penneys being a bit messy with their sizes.

and I completely agree bout dresses and skirts being too short, I'm 5'10 so most dresses just look like tops on me. a few dresses I have I just couldn't wear without tights, most shops don't have a tall range either, and if they do it's fairly limited. sigh..
so if you think all the clothes are for the tall girls you're wrong and I dno who the clothes are for haha

To be honest, I find this season no worse than last year. I can never find clothes that fit me. I'm 5'3.5" and while I could do with losing some weight, I'm still a size 12.

I love summer becuase I have a few cheap and cheerful skirts that I throw a tank top over and I'm done. Finding a tank top that fits me is physically impossible, but I improvise.

Come Autumn/Winter/Spring, I'm screwed! I have so little clothes because I can't find things that both fit and suit me. I spent the last four months trying to find a pair of jeans that fits. I finally found a pair this weekend! It's not that hard to stock bootcut or straight leg jeans. The majority of people don't look good in skinnies, so I don't know why people bother. They are all shops seem to sell :(

Thank you so much for starting this thread!

i'm plus size so im limited even more again, but god yeah everything is yuck, flowers, flrilly, lacy and sleeveless....i cant find anything nice to wear with sleeves, so annoying. im not into that bizy grannys floral wallpaper with frills and ruffles. Wish it suited me. but alas im not a flowery type gal. too much texture and florals just makes a area look bigger.

I like the kaki green military earth tones, but not the cheryl cole navy and red military look.

at least the fashion seasons are changing soon! Fingers cross for Autumn/winter fashions

and yes oh my god....i havent been able to find bootcut/slouch/regular straight cut jeans in ages....like ick! skinny jeans only work on certain ppl!

I have bought some lovely dresses in M&S lately, and one in fatface, and am loving them. Did want to get another dress in M&S, but was too tight around the boobs, but been pleased with my recent purchases. I think it is very much hit and miss, as one dress I got in M&S, was told the day I was trying it on in changing room, that it had only come in that day .
