New to Ireland: which fuel for heating?

I'm new to the country (from the US) - we are used to gas-based forced air heating, and here we have an oil-fired central boiler (radiators), and two small open fireplaces in the two front rooms.

Been experimenting with turf + coal up to this point, but wondering what the most cost effective form of heating is? Obviously we'll need to use the boiler/radiant heat to get the whole house covered, but for the front rooms, what would you recommend?

im not a fan of turf as the turf i have used has never given off much heat, i have always used seasoned firewood.

I guess when you are looking for cost effective heat that would depend on what form of fuel you can get your hands on at a realatively low cost. If its wood make sure its well seasoned. All i would say is try out some different fuels and rate the heat from them and then compare the cost.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice. Seems like it might be late in the year to get firewood that is properly seasoned, but I'll check around. The coal fire we had going last night was quite warm, but I am not sure where to buy more coal in Wicklow Town. Will have to do a bit more searching this week, but appreciate the advice.
