Buying A Laptop Next Week. Any Advice?

    Hi Guys

Not a tech head, so would welcome any advice. Switching from a dead tower to a laptop, cause tired of lugging a tower and accessories around when I move. Trying to downsize all my belongings :)

Just about to start a PhD so while I can afford something now, it'll probably have to last the three years till I'm working full-time again.

Checked out the laptops in PC World the other day and was quite taken with the ones with 17" screens. Gonna be spending a lotta time with my laptop and these looked more usable. Had a 19" flat screen with my tower and dropping down to 17" seems fine. Plan to buy an external 1 TB HDD cause study-wise, I gotta back-up everything, so the size of the laptop's HD isn't critical I'm thinking.

Apart from downloading lotsa music and movies, I do play COD/BF2 the odd time and would like to get BF3 when its released next year. All work n no play....etc :)

Budget-wise, sub £/€1,000 would be preferable, ideally around £/€800, cause I also gotta buy a new printer. Was looking at the Samsung R780 (i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD) but unsure about the processor and graphics card in terms of keeping up with games over the next twelve months. Graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce 330M which I've read mixed reviews of. Seen this laptop on the www for £750. Not sure if I need, or can afford to go to an i7 processor, but did see an R780 i7 for £1000, 6GB RAM, 500GB HD.

Am in the UK for another two weeks, before heading back to Cork and I'm assuming there's a better & cheaper choice available here.

    Any suggestions, hugely appreciated! :)
