Theoretical iPhone Purchase Question

In Canada at the moment, and it's iPhone 4 madness everywhere. I was talking to someone back home about it, and they said I should buy a few and subsidise one for myself. It's almost impossible to touch one, since there are mad queues everywhere for this yoke, but it got us thinking.

Would it be possible to buy an iPhone on a contract for whatever price it is, return to Ireland, get it unlocked and have everything work out fine?

This sounds smashingly evil to me, but I imagine someone could block the handset or something to ruin the plan. Does anyone know? (There's actually an Apple "Genius" living in my house, but I'm sure he'd be obliged to report me to the Big Apple if I asked him.)

What is this plan, exactly? Is it to buy a SIM-free phone or is it to steal? If the latter, I suggest this thread terminates with the word now, aforethought.

No, I'm saying if you bought the phone on a contract and moved country, do they block the phone? I know they can block phones in Ireland, so I assume it's the same here.

And you certainly won't catch me queuing at 4am for an iphone. :P

Run this by me again? You are proposing to dishonour the contract, if I understand you correctly and you know this, because that is the the only reason you fear the phone might be blocked.

Throughout the world this is called "theft".

they actually cant block the phone,

they can only ban if from their network, but you would still only be able to unlock with ultrasn0w and it wouldn't make a great purchase in my opinion.

she wouldnt get the phone in the first place. in order to sign up to a contract you need to prove a certain amount of details including proof of address, bank account and proper ID such as passport or Drivers Licence.

in the US you need to provide your social security number, i dont know how the OP is going to get his hands on so many fake documents judt to get a locked iPhone?

it would be cheaper to buy a factory unlocked one tbh

and i dont think theres much of a mark up on them over here any more as apple sell them direct from their website, yes theres a 3 week wait but i'd rarther wait 3 weeks and buy from Ireland than pay more for a canada phone that i may or may not get any warranty on.

OP, i think your plan is severly flawed in my opinion.

wasnt really a simple question to be honest, your trying to do something very complicated.

you would be better off buying a load of factory unlocked versions but you run the risk of not making your money back on them back in Dublin as they will cost you near the same as they are here.
