I have got my PPL which I did in OBA and have around 60 hours. I am looking to get a Frozen ATPL.

    My Plan is:

    50 hours hour building
ATPL Distant Learning Course from CATS
    Do my CPL-MEP in OBA/EASA
Do my FI Rating with OBA/EASA
Do a MCC course with Parc

Does that sound right to people. I keep thinking I have left a massive part out but I can't think what it is.

Is it diffucult to keep the CPL current?

how can you do an mcc course with simtech when you dont have an IR rating:D also the long distance ATPL books are mainly from the bristol QB as for the FI rating i would not bother with it.
depending on your own private life/work it can be done full time within two years.

60hrs under the belt, 155 in Ireland for a CPL isnt it?

Then another 30 before the flight test?

240 hrs for an Instructor Licence.

Small steps before leaps and bounds is my advice.

    IR what, 38k.

Frozen ATPL is great n' all but will you get the 1000 hours with that mentality over a 5 year period before the credit becomes invalid?

Keep up the good work either way.

In order to be issued with a CPL, you'll need 200hrs total time, of which, 100hrs must be PIC. The CPL is a minimum of 25hrs so really, you'll need 175hrs before starting your CPL training. You'll also need a night rating before starting your CPL which is 5hrs. So, all in all, by my count you need 110hrs of hour building plus the 5hrs for your night rating. As already mentioned, you'll also need an IR, the most expensive part of your training, that is if you don't plan on paying for a type rating :p

If you're definitely going to do distance learning, my advice is go with Bristol GS.

You left out the IR, you're nothing without the IR. And you won't get any work with the Flight Instructor rating unless you have an IR or you train with the organisation you hope to work for as an Instructor.

Thanks for the everyones input. I have only reacently started looking into this so am still learning.

Basically, I am only 17 and would like to go get my CPL but the terminology is confusing me. What exactly is the difference between Frozen ATPL & CPL. AFAIK a Frozen ATPL just means you have your CPL & IR & ATPL ground exams done. It then 'turns' into a ATPL once you have the required hours is that right?

Could I do a FAA-IR and convert it to my JAA license easily or would it be best to do a JAA-IR and is there such a thing. Been trying to find information on it now!

afaik your f ATPL comes un frozen after 1500 hrs TT as for the IR you would be better to do it in a JAA school rather go through the hassle of converting it.

It isn't unfrozen or 'turns into an ATPL' unless you have 500 hours of multicrew time among other stipulations. Generally it's a routine operation done during normal line proficiency checks with the airline you would hope to be working for by then. You cannot become a Captain of aircraft above a certain weight without an ATPL. You don't need an ATPL to fly bigger aircraft though but you won't be hired unless you have passed all the ATPL exams.

You can do an FAA or other CPL/IR/Multi and then go through a conversion course with a JAA flight school after you've done all the JAA written exams. But it's a huge duplication of effort. Better off doing the whole thing under the JAA in the first place.

Thanks again for the information. I think I am finally getting there.

Let's say I get my CPL-MEP & IR & the ATPL Written Exams. Do the ATPL exams expire. As in will I need to get the required hours within a certain time-frame for my ATPL to unfreeze?

Also, what is the requirements to keep CPL-MEP & IR current?

Before you do any of the above, check yourself in for a Class 1 medical.

    Hi there
Ronnie is right.Class 1 first.Assuming you pass that, then go and talk to the flying schools.Seeing as you are only 17, you have a Leaving Cert to deal with first.Prioritise.Don't rule out the UK, either.A lot more opportunities are available over there than over here.
