BMW 320d issue

My 02 BMW 320d runs quite well and usually there is no lack of power from the 150bhp engine. However now if I put the foot down and go up through the gears flat out sometimes the power cuts out and the car remains at the same speed despite me keeping the foot down.

If I restart the car all is well again immediately. There is no leaking oil White smoke or strange turbo sounds/whistling

Is this a symptom of the typical failed turbo or hopefully something cheaper like MAF?

I'll be getting it hooked up to diagnostic equipment and looked at but some info here would be good
