Another female TD (I'm not being sexist, this just follows on from the Olwyn Enright discussion) has said she won't seek re-election:

I'm never dissapointed to hear of people from political families quitting politics.

Her husband was also a councillor and now one of her sons is also, while I commend their service to their community and country, I think political dynasties have done enough damage to this country, so I think her standing down can only be a good thing.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have always liked Liz from way back & IMO one of the absolute best prospects for ministerial office. Is she interested in The Park I wonder ... definitely would get my vote.

No she's not interested in the Aras

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I love the cheek of the announcement. What makes them think for one second that they'd get re-elected anyway:confused:

She never claimed that, she said she will not seek re-election. Fair comment in my opinion.

then announce it when the election is gearing up, not now, not on national press. No one outside their constituency can do anything about it or is likely to care really either.

Why shouldnt she announce it now?? It gives her party and potential candidiates time to get ready.

The appropriate time for a sitting TD to announce that they're not going to re-run is when they decide they're not going to re-run.

Political parties decide their candidates months (some years) before a general election - they maintain a list of the people that the local party organisation or national party have decided will be the candidates in a given constituency.

Where the timing of a general election is predictable (and in this case it pretty much is), it would be silly for a sitting TD to leave it until that election is officially announced before themselves announcing that they're not interested in taking part in it. There's nothing cheeky or presumptive about the announcement, ad the timing is fine rather than leaving people hanging until the last minute.

I wish there were more people like this who realised that politics needs a new generation and they are not it. I mean, c'mon, the likes of PJ Sheehan in Cork South West, born 1933!! Wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't been a TD since 1981 without coming to anyone's attention for anything other than coffin dodging. At least his 79 year old compatriot Jackie Healy-Rae has only been there 13 years and occasionally causes a stir, if always for a trivial reason with no legislative substance.

Politics needs a spectrum of age groups, but realistically at nearly 80, would you not be too tired to legislate the will of the vast majority of a population that is significantly younger than you.

Term limits need to be looked at.

Was surprised to see that Liz M. is 63 she looks alot younger.
She is dead right to retire and pass on the job to the next generation.
Not hold on and on forever

How many women does this leave in politics?

It's good to see her acknowledging that it's time to move on and leave space for younger candidates. Maybe a few of her male counterparts might follow suit.

That webpage has "new era" in the top right, apparently without irony. The guy is old enough to have fought in the Korean War...

The median age in Ireland is 34.5 years, but only 5 TDs are under that age, and the average age is 54. Hardly a makeup conducive to new ideas (the American Founding Fathers were 43.8 on average, Jefferson was 33)

I don't recall ever even hearing of him. Ever.

Yes but is the next generation her son by any chance? Yesterday I was talking to a taxi driver (yes I know...) from her constituency and he claimed that her son, currently a councillor, is groomed to replace her.

He has to win a selection convention first

You'll hear of him soon - the Sindo is carrying a big story tomorrow - on July 8 he told a drunk garda who wouldn't let him leave the Dáil "you'll be in trouble for this" and "you'll get nothing when we are in power". New Era indeed.

Liz McManus said as much in a interview on Newstalk.
