Weinling Sales

Its that time of year again folks. The sales are starting. Has anyone sold anything yet or been at any to see prices?? Personally it was a good year for cattle. I feel that my weinlings did very well. I have 6 Autumn born chaorlais bulls (Born october to december) to sell next week. I'm thinking about bringing them to Mohill - you might have seen an article on last week's journal about the new facilities that they have which should attract more export buyers there. First sale if on September 15th, so I might take a chance then.

I weighed them last night - the best calf is 515kg - he's a late November calf. The smallest calf is 460kg - born on christmas day. Looking at the Journal, these sort of calves seem to be making almost €2 per kg - but I'd need to be getting that to have any profit out of them.

So, have you weinlings to sell ???

17 calves this crop. 14 heifers out of the total. Is that a record?
One is October 09 out of UBN Limousine. She's about 400kg. Was offered €800 off the cow for her this week, but I want to keep her for breeding.

All the rest are Feb /March, so I will keep till November or so. Bit too light at the moment, and sizing up a few more to keep for replacements.

Was in Ennis last Tues to see the trade. Good in general. I thought the heavy bulls were slow enough to sell. Say over 450kg. Seemed to me the 380kg to 430kg bull was making much better price per kg than the heavy guy. In fact put me thinking about the real value of creep feeding???
Blues were dissapointing enough. Char and Lim lively enough.

Yeah back round to that time of year again,

Have some cattle to sell first, 14 going next week and the rest shortly after. But will start buying back in after that.

Bought some in Mohill last year, light bullocks under €700, usually ChX or LmX if the Charolais were too dear. Suppose prices will be dearer this year, but won't be so bad if the sale prices are dearer too. Looking forward to seeing the new layout in the mart. Nice people down there, always make you feel welcome. But don't know if I'll get to as many sales since I hear they are switching the Wednesday sale to the daytime.

    Best of luck.

Yea, no more night sales - which doesn't really help if you're working.

Judging from the Journal 'price watch' prices are back up to 2008 level from the slight drop last year.
I wonder if the price drop on heavy bulls is due to the drop in demand in the Irish market, exporters seem to prefer around the 400Kg mark. The high price of grain expected here in the fall may be putting the Irish finishers off.
My weanlings are a bit on the light side, born Mar/April, all from good Ai bulls, so at least they're a bit fancy. Will be Nov too before I sell. Just started them on meal now!

Had some of mine in Abbeyfeale last Saturday, good trade, had 4 CH bulls all made the 2 euro/kg some heifers to go now tomorrow again. Anything over the 450kgs didn't do as well one guy had about 12 blues, the ones he had from 400kg- 430kg all made the 1000euro easy, one hit 1100, any he had that were 500kg+ made about 900. Still alot better than last year.

At our last farm walk the adviser was telling us that there is an exporter that will pay €2.50 per kg for Belgian Blue for anything that's over 450kg from the farm gate. So if you have bb bulls that are 450kg then you should be expecting at least €1100 for them in the mart.

    Serious question.

Why does anyone pay that much for a Belgian Blue, and how do they make a shilling if they finish them at today's factory prices???????

at this stage i would wait till the single farm payment comes out, it had a significant impact on weanlings last year for a couple of weeks.
