I need some advice because I have no idea how much to charge for usage of a photo.

An American design agency want to use a photo of mine that they found on Flickr in a client's brochure and website. The brochure would be published for 2 years in 28 countries and they're printing 20,000 copies.

    Any ideas?

    $$$$$$$$$

    Pick a number.

I'd say $500, but it depends on you.

Thanks, I did some research and I think that's a good average price.

I also found a stock photo pricing calculator that gave me some averages that sounded fair.

1/4 page or spot use: $450
    1/2 page: $500
    Full page: $650
    Cover: $700

Also ask to be named: free (international) publicity for you.

I got an email like this a while back, they offered me €60 and after quoting some prices myself they told me they could get a photo from istock for $10 so I told them to do that.

aye, you're much better off not getting 100-odd quid for a photo lying in your flickr stream. muxh better to get nothing and having a moan instead.

Anyone can get images of virtually any subject these days for less than a euro RF. take the money when you can get it. it's not like you are giving them full rights

If you're talking about my thread then I think you missed "we will be needing World rights"...

that means that they need rights to repro it worldwide. it doesn't mean they own the rights

"We normally negotiate a fee for the full rights... I would like to suggest a fee of £60 per image"

Does that clear it up a bit?

ah, thats fair enough so. they dont get full rights with stock images though.

When I explained that to her, she didn't really have an answer and then told me I didn't know what I was talking about so I left it.
