Win 7..black screen

    Hi,

    Win 7 64bit home premium.

When I start my machine it starts to load Windows, I get the 4 colored blobs amination merging into the windows logo, says 'Starting Windows' then the screen goes black and all I can see is the mouse cursor.

I can start in safe mode (in safe mode as I type now!), I tried system recovery and rolled back the last update (2/9/2010) but that didn't help.
Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't bring up the taskmanager either.

I don't really know what else to try, where to look for the problem. Any advice please?

    Thanks.

If Safe Mode is all that works for now then you should at least do as much as possible to check for viruses and the like. Some programs won't install or run in safe mode but try Malwarebytes for starters and see if that comes up with anything.

Does the PC freeze or can you continue to move the cursor until you reboot?
What graphics card are you using?

Fixed it, I recovered back to about a month ago and it started OK, ran a virus scan and it picked up some malware (seemed benign enough, some kind of popup crap). Cleaned it and all is OK.

Graphics is an Nvidia 8800GT, updated the drivers about two months ago so dont think that was the problem. A bit of Googling says that black screen with only mouse cursor is common unough state, could be a lot of different issues, I think the black screen might be a new and improved BSOD!
