It's now available to download. Anyone installed yet? What do you think?

I downloaded it from the website but it wouldn't install cos I am running the 64bit app and I downloaded the 32bit app. Can't seem to find the 64bit app yet. And when I check for updates on my current version of iTunes 9.2.1.4
    Anyone get a 64bit app?

Edit - DOH, I just realised that there was a 64bit version on the site! Downloading it now :-D

I like the subdued IU changes and the new icon. Ping looks interesting, although in reality I don't know if it will be something I use.

Strange how they placed the close/minimise/maximise buttons on the top right vertical instead of horizontal. Are they trying to confuse us?!

i like it, like the new UI....... i cant see Ping taking off, if they get 10% of the 160m accounts to use it like they do facebook they will be doing well

I really really wish they had fixed performance this time around, I shouldn't have to dread plugging in my iPod to charge it because iTunes has to open! It's the same as always really. Haven't had a chance to test Ping yet though, it could be good!

Edit: It turns out that Ping is crap.

    From the page here:

    callout_download20100901.png

WTF? Did they let the intern do this?

And why do I need last fm integrated into my itunes?

(and why has my iPhone 3g slowed down so much since I "upgraded" to ios 4?)

Apple are starting to annoy me more and more these days.

    Is Last.Fm integrated with it?

Or is it Ping you mean?

    I'm liking it.

    Just downloaded it.

    First impression:

    1
App looks ok. Logo looks awful. What is that supposed to be at the tom of the volume bar? A rotary knob on top of a slider? It looks like a rock!

    2
The new "tick box" needs more space around it. Actually, the whole interface needs more space and definition. It looks like a messy spreadsheet more than a jukebox interface.

    3
Oh great. iTunes has taken over my 4th mouse button. Now more handy show desktop on my mouse?

    4
Ping... My god. They didn't use the new logo as a dot on the "i" in Ping. No they didn't..

    5
Ping... They want my real name and location. I would prefer to be able to use a pseudonym.

    6
Ping... Accessing iTunes Store... Accessing iTunes Store... Accessing iTunes Store... Accessing iTunes Store...

    7
Ping... Ok I've checked it out and it's rubbish. Anyone know how to turn it off? (edit - click on your email address in the top right.. of course:()

    8
Ping... So if I try to use a pseudonym on my Ping display, it changes the name in your billing address.

    9
    Ping... Google BUZZ anyone?

    10
Why the 90 degree flip on the buttons in the top left corner?

So it looks like Apple are doing the same to iTunes as they have done to their Operating System and Browser - adding B*L*O*A*T instead of refining things.

So much for simplicity and transparency. Apple have lost their way.

    To sum up:
    I hate it.

You guys probably think I'm starting to look like a troll. I assure you, I fell in love with Apple products back around 2003, and since then, as Apple have become more and more cynical and anti-consumer, it has become a love-hate relationship. At this point, I'm running out of patience with Apple.

Does anyone know of a good free media player for mac?
One that just ... organises and plays music?

Farewell iTunes. I fear your demise might be the start of a long road back to Microsoft for me.

Find the itunes app in your Applications folder.
    Right click
    Show package contents.

Instead of backing up the original rsrc file, you could just rename it something like "original skin", so its always there in the folder, incase you change your mind.

If anyone else is using a really great non apple mouse such as this:

    microsoft_mouse5000-thumb.jpg

    BE WAREY!

My mouse has stopped functioning properly since installing itunes 10.

My middle click now goes into app switching (like Apple/TAB)
My thumb button (button 4) now does nothing...

    WHY? APPLE? WHY?

    EDIT-
I was finally able to override the new settings (which have NOTHING TO DO WITH ITUNES!)
    by downloading this:

Turns out there was a reason for the delay is releasing it yesterday.. facebook connection for finding friends was removed last minute.

    link

All in all I don't find much difference. It is very grey, which I don't like. Ping is only a new service but I can see it might have some benefits. Time will tell if it's as useful as genius.

Tbh I don't think it's fair to judge Ping not even a day after it goes live. I'm pretty sure FB was equally as useless the day it went online. If it helps me share music suggestions with my mates (and visa versa) without even thinking about it then I'll be all for it.

The very first thing I thought was "WTF is with the vertical buttons??" They're awful. Thankfully, they're fixable using one terminal command:
    defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -1

    Much better :D

With that out of the way:
    - I agree that the tick boxes are too indistinct.

    - I don't like the new logo, but I can live with it.

    - I don't like the idea of Ping, and would like a way to remove it from the menu entirely. Then again I don't use Facebook either.

    - I do like the snappier performance.

So basically I hate the UI and Ping.

This probably merits a new topic, but I agree. I've somewhat reluctantly just bought a new MacBook Pro, having taken a long hard look at the competition first. The hardware just fits my needs better than the PC alternatives (i.e. I value the battery life and the trackpad over Blu-Ray and a quad-core i7.) If Photoshop was available for Linux, in a useable fashion (not Wine), I'd be running Ubuntu on it rather than OS X. It's already on my Home Theatre downstairs. I'm very sorry I bought a Mac Mini for my bedroom HTPC, and I'm considering selling it and getting an Acer Revo, even if it costs me a few quid extra. And I'd build an Ubuntu PC over a desktop Mac any day. Apple's focus on easy online media sales is ruining both its computers and the other functionality of its media devices.

Nice one - I knew someone would get the commands to change back.

Terminal to change gui, love it.

Just in case anyone is new to mac and really wants to change the iTunes 10 icon, its easily done:

This probably merits a new topic, but I agree.

It reacts way faster , the last version was getting sluggish as I have 260GB of a Library on my macbook pro.

My Ear's think it sounds better streaming to my Airport Express setup:D

ps Thank God it did not break my Last.FM setup this time..as I will be using it and not "Ping" (had a quick look ,no like)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,230 ✭✭✭Breezer

I've downgraded back to iTunes 9. I'm much happier. And it's actually just as snappy, maybe that was down to the recent graphics update or something (I haven't used iTunes that much recently).

It seems ok, but it seems AirPlay can't actually send video to remote AppleTV's like the iPod/iPad will be able to. (I know I can still browse it the old way)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭creativedrinker

Im finding itunes 10 alot faster than 9, i don't see the attraction to ping tho.. i messed about with it but dont see much of a benefit to it.. will stick to facebook for the time-being..

Go to Store menu > View my account. Scroll down and there's an option to turn it off.

Not much of a change from my point of view, I borrowed a case full of CDs to upload and when I went to upload them it turns out there is a bug so it wouldn't recognize the cd so I had to turn the "Download CD Names" off and type them all in by hand, that parked wrecked my head.

Should have been 9.3 IMO. Pure missed opportunity to do a complete OS X / Quicktime X style overhaul which is badly needed.

Finding podcasts I've listened to are being synced with my iPod as new (unplayed). Most annoying, especially when you realise several minutes in that you've already listened to it.

One of the artists Ping is recommending me to follow is Buddy Holly. So if it can get a man who has been dead for over 50 years to post comments, reviews etc., it must be the greatest scientific breakthrough of the century!

What the hell is ping ideally supposed to do?

Also is there actually last.fm integration because that would be somewhat handy?

edit: I just had a go of ping where i started following one band which is Nine Inch Nails and it recommended i start following the Glee cast?! I can assure you all that that sh1te is not in my music collection so why does ping not just search your music collection and tell you what artists you have you can actually follow or whatever? I still dont know what the point of this is...

    iTunes 10.0.1 is out now;
iTunes 10.0.1 makes it easier to share your favorite music with your friends on Ping. You can now Like or Post about music right from your iTunes library. You can also easily see the recent activity of a selected artist in your library, or of all artists and friends you follow on Ping using the new Ping Sidebar.

This release also provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

    • Addresses an issue where the picture quality of a video changes depending on whether the on-screen controls are visible.
    • Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit while interacting with album artwork viewed in a separate window.
    • Fixes a problem that affects the performance of some third-party visualizers.
    • Addresses an issue where the iTunes library and playlists appear empty.
    • Resolves an issue that created an incompatibility with some third-party shared libraries.

iTunes 10 comes with many new features and improvements, including:

    • Introducing Ping. Use Ping to follow your favorite artists and friends or connect with the world's most passionate music fans. Discover the music everyone is talking about, listening to, and downloading.

    • Rent HD TV episodes for just 99¢ each. Watch them on your Mac or PC, on-the-go with iPhone or iPod touch, or in your living room with the all new Apple TV.

    • Play your favorites on the all new iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, and Apple TV.

    • Play music wirelessly with AirPlay on AirPlay-enabled speakers, home theater receivers, and iPod accessories.

    • Explore many look-and-feel improvements throughout iTunes.

    • Enjoy performance improvements which make iTunes faster and more responsive.

    • Additional voice support with VoiceOver Kit for iPod.
