Dairy free diet - is there any good milk substitute that isn't soy based or sweet ?

So I want to give up dairy for a while on the advice of my doctor. I know it's not ideal to cut it out of your diet but it's just a short term experiment under medical supervision.

Is there any decent alternative to milk out there that isn't soya and doesn't have sugar in it ?

I have only found almond and rice milk and both were putridly sweet and no unsweetened version was available. I have tried goats milk and couldn't stomach it either.

Is there anything else out there I could ad to tea to make it drinkable ? I'll miss tea above all things if I can't find a decent milk substitute

I have some coconut milk which is quite nice. This stuff is intended for drinking, it's not the stuff you cook with. I got it in JC Savage in Swords. Can't remember the name, it begins with K.

Have you tried lemon in tea? Make the tea less strong and try some lemon.

I've made my own almond milk in the past it's very easy and you make it as sweet as you like it, you could try googling for recipes. Oatmilk isn't as sweet as rice dream. Coconut milk is a good creamer for certain recipes. You can also buy vegan creamer powders online but have no idea what the ingredients are. Otherwise you might just have to learn to live without for now.

Thanks Eileen that sounds great. Can you put the coconut milk into tea ? It sounds very nice. If you can remember the name please let me know.

I do like lemon in tea but it doesn't have the same comfort factor as a "proper" cup of tea I find. :)

If anyone has any other suggestions too please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks Sapsorrow. I was googling recipies this morning and I will have to try some. What kind of shelf life do milks you make yourself have? Do you need to make some everytime you want to use it?

I'll look into those vegan powders too. Thanks

About three days, you could try freezing it!

    It's Kara www.karadairyfree.com/

I don't take milk in tea, so I don't know, but there are recipes where you cook with it, so maybe.

Thanks a million. I will definitely try that. Freezing is a great idea too and I'll give it a go as well.

Thanks very much Eileen. That looks lovely. I hate drinking dairy milk except in tea so that looks like a drink I would actually enjoy and I will try it in tea & report back if I can find it. :)

I used Alpro light soya milk - it's unsweetened (still sweet but not so much) I like soya milk in tea though... Vanilla green tea is nice as a tea substitute.
