I need to get the front pipe on the exhaust replaced on my 05 daihatsu charade 1.0 l turns out the system can only be bought from daihatsu dealer parts department and they quoted me 560.00 euro for the system not including fitting for the smallest car on the market ... what a joke

    Seriously, I wouldn't be posting that I have a daihatsu charade 1.0.

But yeah - it's a rip off that the exhaust is worth more than the car....

What exactly is gone. Does this section have the catalytic convertor on it?
I would bet there is a perfectly acceptable cheaper repair than that even if it involves a bit of welding

jimmycrackcorn .. the car is my wifes and anyway there is nothing wrong with it , its a super little car 64 mpg and 170 year tax , really nippy and very comfortable

Just wait for budget 2010 12 c on a litre of petrol and massive increase in road tax everyone will want a 1 l car

Is that going to be the case.... Fcuk that for a game of soldiers. Im seriously close to the point where if petrol goes up anymore I'm going to pack in driving. Next green party memeber I see I might just reduce his carbon footprint to zero. Any more income tax increases and seriously considering packing in the job and all. You would be better off on the dole. I can see how people are very resentful. Ok, rant over for the day.

Ring a few breakers yards for the exhaust though. I'm sure it can be had much cheaper than that.

You'll be surprised to find that it will do 0-100km/h in about 12s. That is nippy for the class and a lot quicker than the best car in the world (according to boards.ie), the Skoda Octavia (base model) :D

BTW, the OPs car is only a Charade in name. It has nothing to do with the previous Charade (including the turbo) from the 90s. The current Charade is what used to be called the Cuore, say no more :D

Is the engine in these shared by any Toyota (Yaris or Aygo maybe)? It may be possible to get the same part from a Toyota dealer.

    Displacement: 1 litre
    Kerb Weight: 808kg

    Max. Torque: 95ft/lb @3500rpm

    From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daihatsu_Charade

It (GTti) had a fairly successful rally career competing in the RAC Lombard Rally in 1989 and 1990 and was highly competitive in the Safari Rally. The GTti won class honours many times and was able to mix it with some of the 2 litre cars on occasion troubling some of the 4wd cars !

So you wouldn't want to drive this 1.0 litre model?:p

Meh, a few people I know would laugh at an M3. Personally I say fair play whatever you buy, but don't laugh at other people's so-called inferior cars - skill beats speed most of the time on a track. On a public road there's no difference between a Veyron and a Micra, except that one of them is insane enough to waste potential investment capital on a rapidly depreciating asset (liability). Fairly play though - the guy who buys a 740i or M5 today is heavily subsidising my purchase of it later on, and I tip my hat to him.

OP - my integrated car kit went in my car a few months ago. Basically there is a box under the drivers seat that is the phone unit and the buttons on the steering wheel and radio are all connected to this box. Sounds v busy but it isn't.

I was quoted 1300 euro for a new unit and it would take 1/2 day to install by the dealer.

If I spent 1300 on a phone system for my car, my wife would throw me out of the house before I even had told her about it.

Anyway, visited my good friend eBay and bought the unit for 189 euro. It arrived 3 days later. Unplugged the broken unit and plugged in the new unit. This took in all about 4 mins (had 4 screws to remove).

    Visit eBay.

    170 year tax

WTF is this Irish fascination of paying a few quid less on tax and buying an absolute sh*tbox :)

It amazes me that someone will run out and buy a Prius over a Diesel and then spend 2 grand more per year on fuel for a saving of a few hundred euros on road tax ??

I thought the Prius did something like 60~70mpg. How would you spend more than a diesel in fuel? Can't imagine someone with a Prius or a 1.0 anything spending €150 a month in fuel.

The Prius is great in a traffic jam, in the real world it gets more like 35-40 mpg

What if its real world driving is spent mainly in traffic jams, city center etc?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Prius#Official_government_data
    United Kingdom
The official fuel consumption data, provided by the Department for Transport, rates the Prius as: 56.5 mpg-imp (5.00 L/100 km; 47.0 mpg-US) urban, 67.3 mpg-imp (4.20 L/100 km; 56.0 mpg-US) extra urban and 65.7 mpg-imp (4.30 L/100 km; 54.7 mpg-US) combined.[113] Eleven diesel-powered vehicles with manual transmissions, most of them smaller cars have better fuel-efficiency (by fuel volume) than the second generation Prius for combined use.[114][115]

The third generation Prius is rated at 72.4 mpg-imp (3.90 L/100 km; 60.3 mpg-US) combined. Ten diesel powered cars match or exceed that figure.[114]

Not everyones real world driving is the same.

ehh I think most people have missed the point here

    1. Its not my car its the wifes
    2. The road tax per year costs less than parking in Dublin for a day
    3. Check the reviews of the daihastsu charade on top gear even clarkson is amazed and gives it a good review
    4. 1 l cars are going to be the norm in a few years when petrol is 2.00 a litre

As I hinted, it looks good on paper ;)

Real life tests by car magazine have shown that it doesn't come close to those figures, wheres modern diesels often do come close.

Downsizing is a major trend in the pursuit of emmission targets, for all the major car companies, see Ford example

    http://www.sae.org/mags/aei/manuf/7205

1.0L 3 cylinder to 1.2L 4cylinder litre turbocharged engines will match the power and torque of today's 1.6 -2.0 non turbo petrol engines within about 5 years.

But you van be sure they'll have remarkably similar fuel consumption too. The point I seem to spend my life making is that there appears to be a fuel to weight ratio and who cares how theoretically economical your car is if it's too small for the job.

Smaller cars are cheaper to buy and cheaper to run. Knowing that, people are perfectly happy to delude themselves into thinking that it's the perfect car and won't accept sound, informed criticism.

In other words, it's amazing how quickly everyone becomes a motoring expert when there's a theoretical saving of money involved.

True, but if its about saving money you'd keep the car you have and run it into the ground.

Buying a new car and driving it off the forecourt loses you 5% straight away.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Fuel economy might be similar but Tax and Insurance and deprecation might be very different. I don't see why you have to be a motoring expert to be able to work out what something costs. I don't see what a perfect car has to do with it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB
