    hi guys,

this has probably been put up a hundred times but I cant see it on the search so maybe you can enlighten me.

I currently have one car normal family saloon but would like to get something for weekend driving. Something like a VW Corado or Merc SL.

The problem is the tax and insurance. Is there anyway of having more than one car but not getting stung twice considering you wouldnt be driving both cars everyday??

Not for tax, but you'll get classic insurance if the car is over 20 years old (assuming you fulfil the criteria). Classic tax too, if it's over 30 years old.

Classic insurance on a BMW with FirstIreland is only 15years or older!

You could buy a car over 30 years and tax it for E48 per annum. Then insure it in a limited mileage policy. Joining an owners club will also help drop the insurance.

If you buy a younger car and only drive it during the summer months you can still take out a limited mileage policy and only tax it for 3 months. You will have to go to a cop shop and fill sign an off the road declaration. This way you won't have to pay back taxes when u go to tax your car.

    god its annoyin isnt it.

Wouldnt mind an Alfa Spider either. If you got one of those 15 years old say 1995 would you get classic?

Is it a hardened fast rule?? Is there particular insurers that might do something different like that one about the bmw's posted above??

I wouldnt mind paying say on a 2ltr spider the tax of what €600 a year if I though I wouldnt have to pay another €600 in insurance ya know.

Alfa Spiders go back a lot longer than 1995. You can get classic tax and insurance on the older ones.

A mid to late 1990s Mazda MX-5 will not break the bank on tax or insurance.

I am mad to get something like a bmw 740i late 90`s. I would only drive it at the weekend but I must insure it as a normal car and tax it so that put me off..

Well, you could insure it as a classic, but not tax it as a classic. That's what Matt Simis' post explained.

The main requirement First Ireland have is that you MUST have a primary car that you're insured on and then the classic (15+ years old) car has to be your secondary car.
They may ask for proof that you're a member of a classic car group but I don't think they're overly strict on this.
You also need to stay under a specific mileage p/year which I think is about 5000 miles or something (but they don't seem to track this - I'd rip the odometer off dash car if I crashed and had done too many miles!:))

You can pay a little extra to get that increased by another 1k miles (or more if you like).
