    Hi Everyone,

I am about to try martial arts for the first time - mostly for pleasure, exercise, self defence and to meet new people.

I have no particular style/class in mind.

I was just wondering if you could make some suggestions for the Swords areas that would take adult beginners (I am 26) and if you could also recommend a style - karate/tae kwon do etc...

    Much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Uriel.

Well Swords is well served for Martial Arts, so I suggest you make a list - short list it and visit them all.

From memory, you have an excellent Judo club in Loreto, however although I know the guys very well I think it may be geared more towards juniors. However I'd suggest you check it out all the same, the contact details are in that link.

I think 'Sid Injustice' (a poster here) is running a BJJ club in Airside, there's a TKD club there too.

There is also a Kyokushin Karate club in Swords - personally I'd have this at the top of my list of clubs in Swords.

There's also a Sambo club in John O'Toole's gym (Image gym) in the car park at the back of The Slaughtered Lamb.. Although its a different rule set to Judo, a lot of people will compare the two - I'm only using this to give you an idea of what Sambo would be like. I've trained with the lad who run's the club, terribly nice guy, very tough lad too.

Try Dermot O'Keefe's Shotokan Karate club at http://www.hokubudojo.org/

    Cheers,

I coach Martial arts in gym in Swords in the airside park. So obviously I think you should give us a shot :)

Website is http://www.xtremefitnessireland.ie/ all the information is on there.

There are classes in MMA (mixed martial arts), BJJ (brasilian jiujitsu), Boxing, Thai Boxing and stuff like Krav Maga and WTF Taekwondo.

Check the time table out and come down and have a look at the different classes and see what you think. If you're not sure what the martial arts names mean google them and youtube them and you'll see some clips that might help you make a decision.

    Hey guys,

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

I checked out a few of the places in the last 10 days and I have decided to go with Makikomi's suggestion of the Kyokushin discipline.

Had my first full class last Thursday night and really enjoyed it. Only about 12 in the class and it was kinda weird being at the end with the young lads. There's one black belt, one brown, 2 green a number of reds (all kids) and two other beginners (one adult, one kid).

Damn though, the knuckle push ups are a new concept too me... pretty difficult so far.

I am looking forward to Thursday.

Thanks again guys, and I am sure I will post on this forum as I get more into it.

Thanks for coming back and letting us know how you got on. The amount of folk that come here looking for advice on where to start and we never hear of them again.

Kyokushin is a tough discipline for sure, stick with it though as long your happy in your progress.

Oh, that's a pity, I wonder is that they just don't follow through on their perceived interest in MA or is just they couldn't be bothered to say thanks for the help.

It is my first time doing any MA so the whole world of it is all very new to me. I have definitely realised that I have to up my fitness levels though :)

Some of them come back armed with a little knowledge and tell us where we're wrong :D

Welcome to the world of Martial Arts.

Don't be surprised if you first choice looses its shine and you want to venture into other styles, this is very common and doesn't mean the first choice was a bad style.

You'll be surprised at how quickly you'll get fitter, and a little tougher.

Hey sorry, Just seen your post.

My classes have been good. I really enjoy them. I have now started going to the Killester Dojo on Wednesday's as well as Swords on Thursdays.

Last night was my first night in Killester and they do a lot of pad work. I found it physically tougher than Swords so far, but I enjoyed it.

I'm really struggling with the knuckle push ups though.

Give it time on the push ups - no hurry - see you tonight.
