Did boot camp last night, legs aren't working today

Had my first night of excercise last night in ages, and did a boot camp. I was fine with all the upper body stuff and ab stuff, but my legs coudn't do all the lunges that were required, and as a result they were useless throughout the rest of the bootcamp.

Today, I can't use them at all as the muscles on the front of my thighs are strained. My legs have collapsed under me 4 or 5 times when walking. Is there anything I can do to help them recover?

I'd imagine that your legs are sore because you didn't stretch them enough or even at all before and after this bootcamp. If im working my legs I always stretch for about 5-10 mins before my workout and have a 5 minute stretch at the end. If i was doing lunges then I would usually be on the bike afterwards to loosen them up.

Basically what I'm trying to say is STRETCH.

Is this actually true or are you exaggerating?

Cos if it is you probably shouldn't be asking here.

I used to do bootcamp and to be fair the guys were normally very careful about insuring plenty of time was spent doing warm ups and downs and they did stress their importance.

Unfortunately not all including myself (till I learned the hard way) took heed of the stretches and did them correctly.

Try doing some quad stretches today - and insure you do them in future.

Lastly, in future, if you don't feel the stretch on the muscle the stretch is intended for, your doing it wrong, call the instructor over and get them to show you.

not much help for today's pain though sorry!

Nope, true as anything. Just when I asked my front thigh muscles to carry my body today, they couldn't, I was walking with my legs bolt straight. Its a bit better now.

To be fair to the boot camp, the guy knew his stuff, there was a lot of warm ups and stretching beforehand, and even more stretching afterwards. The problem lies in me, not the boot camp.

Cheers for the stretching advice, I'll give it a go!

If you haven't done anything in a good few months or even years then you're likely to be sore as hell, especially when loaded up with eccentric heavy stuff such as lunges.

You should still be able to move though, so that sounds kinda worrying. don't go crazy on anything for the next couple of days, drink lots of water, maybe have a gentle stretch, go for walk or easy cycle to get some blood flowing, get plenty of sleep and don't go drinking.

When I first started exercising again after sitting on my hoop for 5 years pretty much the same thing happened me. My leg's were completely unconditioned and horribly weak. Just take it easy the first few sessions until your body catches up.

Ah, right. I got something like that in May where my triceps were so sore I couldn't bend my arm past 90deg.

Try and do something that involves moving them today.
And be damn sure to do something tomorrow.

Actually, Ed's cycle suggestion sounds good if its the front of your legs.

I am of the opinion that the worst thing for DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, its not always delayed...) is not moving the muscles for next two days. It hurts, but it will make them stop hurting quicker.
