Grand daughters of CF52 ... for breeding

My stock bull is out of CF52, and I have 5 grand heifer weanlings from him this year. All out of CH cross cows. I'm considering keeping them for replacements as I have an aversion to buying in:confused:

However, direct female progeny from CF52 are not rated highly for maternal traits.

    Questions are.
Has anybody out there kept either daughters or grand daughters from CF52, and how have you found them?

Is it safe to assume, the low maternal traits from CF52 would be adequately diluted in the second generation?

Thanks in advance for and info on this.

I have exactly the same dilema. My bull is out of cf52 and had to get rid of him this year because he hurt himself. I have a good few nice heifers that I plan on keeping. The way I look at it is, I will only keep heifers from the best cows and the maternal traits of my cows are more likely to come to the fore than the maternal traits of their Grandfather (CF52). I know people that have bought my heifers for breeding, in the past and they are very happy with their purchases.

Sure anyway, if you go to the mart and buy heifers, you could come home with mine and me with yours - what i mean is that CF52 was extremely popular and a lot of cattle have his breeding, you don't know the breeding of heifers when you buy them in the mart - so if you have good heifers, why would you sell them. you risk bringing disease and other unknowns onto your farm if you buy in stock.

    Just my twopence worth!!

we had a stock bull outta CF52 , last winter I kept 4 heifers on and they all calved no issue and all of them have raised good calves this year, in fact probably some of the best calves I have..I have another 4 or 5 heifers from same bull in calf this year and wil have a good few more for next year from his last crop of calves, very happy with them so far, they seem to have plenty of milk but would have come from char and lim cross cows so no prob there..I have one pure bred ch heifer calf this year from 52 also, she is an ok heifer, fairly plain when younger but has come on alot, not sure what to do with her yet

Thanks Reilig and Vanderbadger. Youv'e made my mind up!

When I used to buy in stores and the like, I spent most of my time locked up with TB. Since I stopped buying in, never had a reactor, thank God.

Just don't want to buy on that basis alone, even when I see a stormer of a heifer or cow coming at fair value.

    Thanks

i have both daughter's and grand daughtrer's of 52 and while the daughters look better and have slightly better calves the grand daughters have better milk having said that i have 1 of each which are rearing 2 calves 1 set of twins and 1 has 2 as i lost a cow and the 4 calves look well, now the cows have been on very good grass all summer so that would help the 52 daughter is mud fat as well, the other seems to be putting more into milk for the calves but shes still in good condition.

If you've a granddaughter of CF52, then CF52 will only contribute to only 25% of the genetics. If you've milk in the other 3 grandparents, as it were, then you might be fine.
Agree with the milk though. I culled a fine charolais cow last year, she made €1200 off the grass in June. I'd be embarassed to tell you what her calf made, he was that bad.

Well after taking carefully stock today, I have decided to keep only those which look good enough, and are from my last few char cows which are in turn out of shorthorn cows. I'm banking on the shorthorn gene giving the milk.

You should be fine with shorthorn in the breeding.;)
