Highway Maintenance Incident Response - Who are they?

    Hey all,

    took a stroll out last night quite late (to get a few photos of the Boyne Cable Bridge) and as I was coming home at about 5.30 am (through Mell, if anyone's familiar with Drogheda), I spotted a jeep parked outside a house.

    It had a Battenburg markings (I had a torch on me, which i shone at it, but I couldn't make out if it were yellow and blue, or yellow and dark green) and it had a lightbar across the top (though it wasn't coloured, one of those transparted, low profile ones).

    On the jeep it said Highway Maintenance Incident Response. I was on my way home in what ended up being practically a four hour photo walk, and my cameras and stuff were in my bag, so I was too knackered to get a photo of it, but it struck me as quite strange.

    As i say, I was wrecked tired, but from what I recall, it was vey similar to the Garda jeep below;

    (Picture from the Garda website)
    trafficmerge.jpg

    Except the markings didn't extend up the top of the jeep, like on the one above, and there were two tiers of Battenburg (as opposed to the one line on the Garda jeep).

    Anyone got any idea who these guys are? Never heard of them before, and even their name sounds almost made up (very American).

    Google isn't giving me much. :confused:

    Just curious (and I like to photograph such vehicles for some reason :pac:)

    We have them here on motorways like The eastlink around Melbourne. They are employed by the Motorway directly to attend obstructions on The Motorway like things that have fallen of lorrys, accidents etc etc. They can be seen regularly in front of broken done cars on the Hard shoulder etc. Here they drive ford transits with huge amber warning signs. I can only assume thats what you saw. I did not know iIeland had them.

    There is a link on here to to "Madness in the fast lane" the first unit to attend the two women on the motorway is a Motorway incident unit. Its a Toyota landcruiser with amber lights and marked up

    There you go

    Look at 1.54

    to be honest i think its just some punter that does repairs on road/motorways etc.. Think its just some builder/contractor with a pimped up jeep quite common to see them in Dublin.

    As far as i know they are not official vehicles for NRA/Local Authorities etc..

    I thought they were employees of the group that run the toll on the motorway in question.

    More than likely private recovery/rescue service.......

    [Off-topic]
    In the uk they have highway agency traffic officers.....all is explained in this video.....nothing like this agency in ireland to date....

    Might have something to do with the toll road up there. The M50 have their own vehicles which will attend break downs or accidents and can be used to warn drivers of an obstacle or lane closure ahead. Can also clean up after an accident.

    friend of mine works for the NRA or a subcontracor doing inspections on the motorway and clearing obstructions and drives one of what you describe while at work.

    Would be pretty dangerous to work on the motorway without being highly visible

    The lights are used when escorting things that shouldnt be there like tractors and bicycles off the motorway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭Ziycon

    They are private contractors that look after the M50, these vehicles are used for broken down vehicles, accidents etc. There highly visible due to the nature of a motorway as it would be dangerous not to seem them miles before your on top of them.

    With regard to the name, its just the name the company operating the M50 gave that department, nothing more.

    Enviroteam Emergency Response have many years of emergency response to accidents and incidents on many of Ireland’s roads including the busiest of them all—the M1 Dublin—Belfast Corridor. With our dedicated call out team we can be at the scene in the fastest possible time taking care of the coordination of the emergency services, road cleanup and traffic management

    Someone should tell em that they don't co-ordinate the emergency services !!!.

    Is it possible that the Gardaì/Fire/Ambulance/etc service ever contact Enviroteam whilst en route, to verify the location of an incident or to be kept updated with regards to when Enviroteam arrive (ie; if there are any fatalities or such)?

    In fairness, if any Garda ever asked Enviroteam any geographical question, then obviously Enviroteam are going to exaggerate that and stick it on their website. :pac:

    Just belted off an email to them, to see if it was their jeep or not (and if I can photograph it :p).

    Across from the credit union in mell??
    He works for a small company who do maintenance for the NRA.
    I done work in his house about 6 months ago and had a brief conversation about his job.

    Because most of Irelands motorways are built under PPP, the private company takes on the roll of upkeep on the road, It is usually one of these companies trucks you see with "Motorway Maintenance" on it.

    For example in Cork on the M8, a company called LAGAN provide this service.

    Not entirely sure where the Credit Union is in Mell, but I doubt there's many Highway Incidient jeeps hanging around that area so I'll assume it's him alright.

    It's an interesting jeep. Never heard anything back from my email to them though.

    Some county councils operate similar setups, responding to RTA cleanups, oil spills, incidents needing extra signage etc.

    Midlink, the operators of the M7/M8 PPP section also have incident units for similar work.

    Northlink covers the M1 motorway for maintenance and collects the tolls

    Lagan Quarries are responsible for providing cones etc on the M8 in cork in the event of accidents or spills etc. They have a fleet of well marked and strobed behicles, but mostly yellow or amber combinations are used.

    Came across one of these the other day at the M1 service station at Donabate. Not a Pajero but a Mitsubishi Shogun

    They don't import Shoguns here. Are you sure it wasn't a pajero?

    What do you mean they dont import shoguns here? They do import shoguns and it was a shogun according to a quick reg check on cartell.ie

    Mitsubishi in ireland Import the Pajero and Pajero sport. Mitsubishi in the UK import the same vehicle, where it is known as the Shogun. Any Shogun in Ireland was imported from the UK or elsewhere, but was not an "official import".

    Reg was edited out by mod. Not sure why as I know there are a lot of enthusiasts who keep all these records, including reg numbers. Also, there are pictures in the Vehicle Gallery thread which clearly show reg numbers, even on unmarked Garda cars. There are some irish web sites that have ALL of this type of info (www. blues?????.com for example)

    If any of the enthusiasts want this reg for their records I'll be happy to supply by PM.

    Was definitely a Shogun. I would post the picture I took of the reg plate which clearly shows the Shogun badge but I might get a ban for pushing it :(

    I'm guessing the reason the reg was edited out was because the vehicle belongs to a private company or possibly a private individual. It is not an emergency vehicle rather a road works vehicle.

    Disagree. There is such a vehicle (Ford, not Mitsi) in the vehicle gallery with its reg clear to see for all. Looks like the vehicle is parked in Ashbourne?

    Double standards?

    I did say I was guessing. I am not a mod here nor did I ask for any reg to be removed. Can you point out the picture in question?

    Double standards because a reg plate was edited out? Seriously?

    The registration number was removed by me because I have no way of verifying whether it's a public or private vehicle except the word of someone I don't know.

    You are free to post a picture of this vehicle in the vehicle gallery, and if it is not a private vehicle, the registration number may be included in the picture, the same way other vehicles in the gallery include their registration numbers.

    To top this thread again, in similar vein;

    Who are "EMERGENCY MEDICAL TEAM"? Car drove past me today, looked quite UK/British in appearance.

    It had Green/Yellow battenburg. The car itself was silver, and had EMERGENCY MEDICAL TEAM in green writing in the back window. Sun was blinding me, so I didn't get a look at the license plate to see if it was UK or Irish reg'ed.

    No good with car brands or names or anything, but the body looked something similar to this;

    opel.astra.jpg

    It had a blue light bar, but it didn't stretch the whole way across the roof. It was kinda like this one;

    police-car.jpg

    (But it wasn't entirely blue I don't think, i think there was a white area in the centre, probably for a speaker or such?).

    Anyone know who these guys are? As I say, looked very UK-ish.

  • Posts: 14,344 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    Louth. Drogheda Town. Close enough to the border for it to not be too unrealistic for them to be here, had they been needed for anything.

    Can't think what they would be needed for, though.
