How to deal with a bad practice session?

    Ok so this happens me quite often, there are days where nothing goes right for me in practice. Whether it's because I'm too tired or have a sore arm I am no where near my usual standard.

    So what should I do if I am having one of these sessions? Should I just give up for the day? Keep throwing and try to work through or take a break for half an hour and go back to it?

    I don't get that much time to practice anymore so when I do get the time and I have a rubbish I session it can be very frustrating!

    kingpin this happens to us all espically this time of year when most of us have not thrown a dart (or competitive dart) for the whole summer.
    I just put the board back up tonight after eight weeks of not throwing a dart. Boy was I bad!
    Anyway what I have always done if I am having a bad time at the board is to go back to basics. Sometimes our expectations are to high for a practice session and when the session goes wrong doubths start to creep in and this causes our darts to get worse. This can get out of hand and you start to question if you are as good as you thought you are. (I might have to much wine in me now).
    Anyway my advice is to change your practice to something easier to boost your confidence as darts is all about confidence.
    I often go back to basics and just throw one dart at a single numbers from 1 to 20 moving on to the next after hitting one single. Yes this should be very easy, and it is but it is a great feeling when you are having a bad session and you finish this on 21, 22 darts. Try it again and after that maybe try it on the small segment between the bull and the triple. Before you know it you will be feeling better about your darts and your confidence will be a bit higher. Throw for a few scores at the 20's and then relax and play a few games of 501. You will be surprised at how your "eye" will have come back because you are more relaxed after doing a few easy routines that we all practiced but could not do when we first started playing darts.

    COnfidence and enjoyment KingP, i think greened touched on things there that are spot on....

    Enjoy it.. Make it fun if your on ur own, i wud often pick out a number, say 86, and i must finish it 3 different ways.... Or, 76 going double double.... Where ur practicing, but also trying to enjoy it...

    I do that when im throwing badly.

    I also think we dont actually concentrate when we practice at home as much as we do when in the local or playing in a comp. We go thru the motions, make all the right noises, but we aint really fully into it.

    pick a few games to lighten the mood of your practice, if you enjoy it, it wont seem like such hard work, and dont think to much, dart players biggest ever downfall.
