Garages buying cars for cash?

Was passing Blackwater motors in Dennehys cross in Cork today. They had a sign up as follows "Cars bought for cash. Call in for a free valuation".

Found this quiet unusual, have never really heard a garage actually looking for cars. Thought most of them didn't even want to take trade ins. Would this be the norm?

yup, drop in the market means 2nd hand cars are harder to get so alot of places do it to keep their stock fresh! trade prices tho

There's been places doing this for over 2 years.

Generally you get desperate people needing to sell, that means they get a bargain.

At the moment there is a huge demand from the trade for good quality used cars from the Motor Trade. With not many new cars being bought there aren't many being traded in, so the dealers don't have the used cars to sell to keep the money coming in.

With not much new stock on the ground to sell, dealers could be in trouble if they don't have used to stock to keep things ticking over until January.

If you do get a price off a garage, be prepared for a shock as they will probably bid under trade value which itself is quite a way off what you'd see cars advertised for.

Interesting, i didnt realise this was the case. I would have thought garages didnt want 2nd hand cars as they might be left sitting there . But i'd understand the point too that not many are buying new so maybe more effort then must be put into having good 2nd hand sales.

i have a 2001 Audi A4 1.9 TDI with 162,000 on the clock. i might bring it in out of curiosity, see what they would give for it. What would ye reckon its worth?

If they give you 3,000 for it you would be doing very well. Private sale you might edge towards 4,000. If it's old shape knock 1k of each.

    Similar advertised?

Don't forget they will offer you trade value as they will have to mark up the price for sale.

Also it has high mileage and age against it for a main dealer to be interested

I'm interested to know what they would offer though
