Compaq Preasrio 2100 battery won't charge

I have been given a Compaq Preasrio 2100 for free. The battery that came with with was not working so I went ahead and bought a new battery. Now this battery will not charge up at all. The old one wouldn't either.

The battery symbol in xp indicates that it is charging but in reality it is not. If I remove the AC power the battery will take over ok with whatever power was in it when it left the factory. Reconnecting the AC puts it back to charging again but nothing happens.

    Any ideas?

it looks like internal (mainboard) problem, is the charging light on when the laptop is connected to the wall-charger
