Late NCT, backdated?

The NCT on my car ran out last February and it's been off the road since. I taxed the car for a year last September and now that is up too but I want to start driving the car again.

Someone mentioned to me that if I get the NCT done now it will be kind of backdated until the date it expired. So basically it will only last two years from the date it last expired. Meaning that I will have to get it done again 15 months from now. I had a look on their site and I can't really find a clear answer to this. Does any one have any idea what the case is with this?

Under normal circumstances, yes it will be back dated. If the car was officially off the road for a period of time there might be some exemption, but if so I've never heard of it.

NCT is always due on original reg date of car. It therefore does not matter when you have the test done, it will always expire on date of registration so yes back dated

NCT expires on anniversay of 1st registration so yes that would mean it is valid for the next 15 months. AFAIK there is no exemption for the car being off the road. Considering that some parts continue to deterioriate even while parked up (rubber brake hoses decaying, rust) I can understand why.

Test works out at €2.08 a month, you will have lost 9 months or €18.75, not the end of the world really for something that might save your life.
