howdy. recently every now and again one of two things would happen; either the screen will suddenly go completely black - the mac will still be on but i wont be able to see a thing and would have to manually 'turn it off and on again' or the mac will suddenly just turn off and the only way to turn it on again is to unplug the power, take the battery out, press the gray button on the battery which makes four green dots light for a few seconds, put the battery back in and turn the mac back on.
so.. what is causing this? and how do i fix it?

    cheers

Could be bad or loose RAM, or it could be the logic board failing. If you have the install disc try running a hardware test.

don't think i have the install disc, bought it second hand a few years ago and don't think the guy who sold it to me gave me the install disc will have a look and see if i can find him. if not is there something else i can do? or is there anywhere in dublin i can give the mac to and they will fix it?

i was thinking it could be the power lead or the power lead connection in the mac because sometimes when its connected the light turns from green to orange and it stops charging and i have to move it around so it will charge again, so maybe because the mac switches from getting power to not getting power in short periods of time it messes something causing it to eventually switch off. is that possible? might see if i can replace the power lead and see if it changes anything

Do you not mean it switches from orange to green? Green means the battery is charged. Is the battery full when this problem happens?

I doubt the power cable is causing the problem. A more likely possibility is the battery or DC-in board. But I'd be inclined to associate the black screen with something more serious. iBooks had a history of logic board problems, and the machine is quite old. However, you could try running with just the power cable connected (leave the battery out) and see if the problem recurs. Also, test it just running on battery power.

I would also recommend downloading Rember and testing the RAM.

    thanks

yeah the battery is either full or nearly full when this happens, it charges until its green and then it stays green, then sometimes it will turn to orange and the battery percentage will drop until i move the cable to turn it green again and the battery percentage builds up again.

thanks for the suggestion, next time this happens ill try to see if it reoccurs with just the battery power or with just the power cable connected

i downloaded rember and all tests were passed so i guess its not the ram, it could be the logic board thing then, is there a way of testing that?

    cheers
