Advice on new style

Hi all,hope you can give me some advice.

I got a part time job for the first time this summer,and I've decided to spend some of my money on a new look for going back to college.I really like the look of Zooey Deschanel in 500 days of summer,really feminine and a little bit quirky.I want to start wearing more skirts and dresses,rather than jeans and tops,but at the same time I don't want to look too overdressed.

I'm wondering what would be the best way to recreate this look,to suit a pear shape and the Irish climate?Does anyone know of any good shops to look in?

I was thinking of maybe getting a personal shopper to help me,as for once,I'm not afraid to splash out a bit on clothes.Would you recommend one?

You're in luck because Prada sported a really 1950s silhouette on the catwalk this season, I'm guessing you'd like the vintage style considering you admire Zooey's look. Shops like Topshop have been getting their inspiration from this.

A-line swing skirts are always a good wardrobe staple as they're usually high waisted and flare out over the hips. It's good that you know what body shape you are because this will be a good starting point for any personal stylist. Some stores offer this service for free, maybe get in touch with your local Topshop. Or even consulting someone locally would be a good idea.

Some recommendations of shops:
H&M (if you look past all the logo & neon trend stuff they have great basics, esp. for skirts)
Topshop
Reiss
Warehouse
Zara (for vintage style dresses particularly)
American Apparel (despite their skinny minny image they have some great staples, albeit expensive)

I can't be more help because I don't really shop on the high street and I don't know what your budget is. Obviously the charity shops would be worth a look in too when you know what you want. Buy some magazines like Vogue and Tatler because they have all the S/S looks which will be imitated on the high street and you can get some inspiration from there.

I love that movie and Summer's style is very relatable and feminine, It's also easy to carry through to day wear. I tried this look over the summer and I thought it was great.



This navy dress is great, I would suggest a belted waist when trying to emulate this
look. Miss selfridge is great for dresses also zara.

You should also get some ruffled blouses preferably white/blue and high waisted shorts worn with tights to complete the look. Focus on seperates so you can mix and match. A navy skirt is also
great similar to the one in the picture.

I think Zooey Deschanel is soooo pretty:) Those outfits in the pictures you posted are lovely. Not skinny like her, (more of a very big cooking apple shape at the moment) but would love to try the looks aswell (bar the short shorts!) Very inspiring thread! Going to watch that movie soon.

You really should try it lindtee, I think it looks great. It's easy enough to find the outfits on the high street, ruffled blouses/dresses, belted 1950's dresses,
high waisted shorts, and skirts. Good luck with it and you'll love the movie:)

Also one of the most important aspects of Summer's wardrobe is her blue dresses, Her alternative to the classic LBD.



This look is also quite easy to emulate with short dresses and this monsoon dress with
the bow detail on the waist.

House of fraser is great and it's worth looking in Zara for dresses. Good luck and I'm sure you will look great, It's a lovely look.

I found this interview with the costume designer, the use of the colour blue is genius!

HC: So when you set out to start dressing her for the movie, were you only looking for blue fabrics and accessories?

Absolutely. It was for her eyes, but it was also the romance from a male point of view. Even when you first see her, she has on a white shirt, but still has a blue butterfly. So it tracks all the way through. I just wanted there to be a way to make her stand out. Because she is such the object of desire that in a crowded room the audience and Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) would immediately be drawn to her. She becomes a magnet. The only other place blue is used is the dance sequence, after Tom's first night with Summer. The whole world would turn into her, so that’s what everyone is in blue in that scene — the construction workers, the mailmen, the office workers. Everything becomes kind of a reflection of his love for her.
