Root Canal + Crown

I know there are several topics floating around on here but presumably all replies with information have gone via PM.

I'm just out of the dentist in Dublin having been told I need a root filling and crown in an upper pre-molar (4). I've been told it's going to cost me €2000 over three or possibly four visits.

I called my sister who is a dental nurse in England and she can't believe the money involved as the same procedures at her practice would cost a total of £600 STG.

Can anyone here recommend a dentist in the Newry area that can do a good job at a (comparatively) reasonable price.

    Thanks

I know some of my dental colleagues would shoot me for saying but I think 2000 is expensive for a general dentist to do a premolar root canal and crown. For an endodontist to do the root canal and a prosthodontist to do the crown (two specialists with extra training in these areas) you might even get some change from 2 grand in the current climate. You could also have an implant for not much more.

Again, my dental colleagues might shoot me for saying but if you are willing to leave your current dentist over price, I suggest you shop around the Republic, I think you'll find somewhere cheaper than that, even in Dublin.

And don't compare prices in the UK with the Republic, you're not comparing like with like in terms of quality in many cases, quality of procedure, quality of labwork etc. In fact, a lot of the time you're getting NHS standard dentistry for private fees. I'm referring to mainland UK when I say this, obviously this is a general statement as I don't wish to slight all of my UK colleagues, some of which are consummate professionals. I think you will find that you will pay similar prices in the UK for quality work as you would in Ireland.

Thats expensive, maybe crown lengthening is involved? Sounds pricey, but if the jobs a gud un, its worth it.

    Thanks for the replies.

My sister has assured me that all work and materials in her surgery are way above nhs standards, the price is pretty much the cost price of materials plus chair time - it's what he'd charge his own family.

I've made a few phone calls and found I can just the the root canal and sealing filling done in the North for half the money I've been quoted here. I'm really not particularly happy with this as I prefer to keep the business local but I'm self employed, work is extremely slow and I simply don't have the money that has been talked about.

Once I get the root sealed I'll be happy enough to wait a few months before making a further decision.

The problem with waiting to do the crown after having root canal treatment is that you leave the tooth open to the possibility of fracture, sometimes to the point where the tooth cannot have a crown put on and the tooth needs to be extracted. Just giving you the heads up.

I'd say if you shopped around Dublin you could get it for a little bit more than half the original quote. For the root canal and crown. I'd say roughly between 1100 and 1500 quid.

Thanks Big_G. If anyone can recommend a reasonable dentist, preferably north side, I'd much rather keep the business in the country than look esewhere.
