Cracking joints

Do you have this? Or maybe your co workers or people around you annoy you with this.

Lad in the office manages to crack his knuckes one by one, makes me shudder, I don't listening to it

Having said that, when I bend down to pick up a pen my knees crack loudly, I'm very self conscious over it.
It's a curse though that story I read about cracking joints leading to arthritis seems to be a myth.

I won't call it a strange affliction as it's common, can you do it?

How many people started cracking their knuckles/ankles/whatever after reading the opening post?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

Crack my knuckles all the time. Drives my flatmate insane to the point she starts screaming when I do it. My ma's joints crack so much when she walks, she sounds like somebody walking across sheets of bubble wrap.

Cracking my knuckles gives me great relief, my knees crack when I've been sitting down for long periods or driving a lot. And yes its a myth cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis, you're not doing anything to your joints its the synovial fluid between the joints that makes the noise.

Crack my knuckles a fair bit. Sometimes need to crack my next too, by turning my head to nearly over my shoulder.
Can always crack my right shoulder too. Arms often crack when I am putting baby down in cot.
While cracking my knuckles is done the traditional way, I sometimes have to pull on my thumb to crack it that way too!

.....so anyways, back to cracking joints..

Yes, I have extremely crackly joints, most of my joints are like this I think; it's greatly satisfying cracking them :)

Had an Irish teacher in school who literally couldn't look at people cracking joints; she would freak out, flinching and would look away covering her eyes, shouting at them to stop; fun :)

I thought this was a thread about really really good pubs and we were going to have to discuss them in a weird mix of English and American slang.

    This chap is bummed out.

lol When someone cracks their neck on both sides I always think their heads going to fall off or spin around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,554 ✭✭✭✭alwaysadub

Only thing i can crack is my right knee, and that's not on demand.
When i was in school, one of the lads used to crack my knuckles for me. Never figured out how to do it myself though. Wouldn't be bothered with doing it now anyway!

OMG know i have desperate urge to crack my knuckles and it hurts. Used to do it all the time as a kid but stopped years ago coz my mother told me it causes arthritis thank god its a myth;)

Cant crack my knuckles or anything like that.

However every once in a while my back would be sore, just lean over the back of a small chair and my spine cracks into place, instant relief..:D

I don't crack my knuckles, would be way too afraid of breaking something, plus obviously don't need to, but my jaw cracks a lot, so does the base of my spine and my big toes.... don't know why. It's common apparently. My family constantly comments on the loudness of my jaw cracking when I'm eating. sometimes its very loud, other times only I can hear it. Mentioned it to the dentist the other day as he had taken an xray, but he said its fine as long as its not sore. so I shall continue annoying people with my crackin! :D

I hate the sound of other people doing it..

But like everything else in the world, its seems better when I do it

Disappointed, thought the thread was about smoking...:(

But to stay on topic I think all my joints pop or crack at some point and I'm still a young lad (relatively speaking :D).

I think that's what a doc said to me once when I asked about it, wasn't paying full attention that day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 889 ✭✭✭Bajingo

I just do it sub consciously. It is sick to do it when eating or something and I always find myself apologizing for it.

It's gas build up as a result of synovial fluid which is rapidly collapsed, making the noise, composed of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide.

It's the Fluoride in the water. Weakens the joints.

I swear I've never seen more knuckle cracking going on than when I lived in Ireland.

I'm the only person I know whose feet crack like knuckles - the joints between the metatarsals. Not as loud as the knuckles, but it has freaked out a few girls ... :o

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I can't crack my knuckles or any of my joints. My brother cracks his toes a lot and the sound... ugh. :(

I can crack my jaw! I can't remember how I ever figured it out but it's fun to annoy people with it especially if they're cracking their knuckles at me. :D

It doesn't bother me to an extent but if they keep at it I can get fairly annoyed by it.

Same as this. Get a weird satisfaction from crackin my knuckles. And once I start, I have to crack them all, even if someone asks me to stop, have to get them all ou of my system 1st, then I stop :p

Can crack my knuckles, fingers, back and especially my neck. Neck freaks people out as it's both sides and on a good day, about six loud cracks on each side.

I'm healthy and definitely not destined for the grave sooner rather than later.

I crack my knuckes both ways, pushing fingers into the palm and then away from the palm. My wrists can crack indefinitely by rotating them. Knees crack if I've been sitting down for a while, can sometimes swing my lower leg and have it crack at each apex. Toes crack also, don't have a whole lot of control over that. Can crack my back to sort back pain, but that's a bit awkward. Can crack my elbows sometimes too.

used to have crackling joints til i changed from ciggies to rollie baccy.. was the arsenic it think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭Hackysack

I don't really know why but I love cracking my joints. I know it freaks some people out but sometimes I do it subconsciously.

My wrist cracks quite easily, my knees crack, my ankles crack and practically everything does.

Glad to know i'm not the only one!

I like to crack my fingers by intersecting them between my hands. (Like closing your hands in prayer).

Then just stretch out with a big crack.

I can crack the tips of my fingers, my ankles, and my right shoulder for some reason. I should get that checked because it hurts sometimes as well. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,092 ✭✭✭CiaranMT

    I can crack:
    • Elbows
    • Wrists
    • Every finger, numerous times (right thumb indefinitely)
    • Back
    • Knees
    • Ankles
    • Bridges of the foot
    • Big toes

    :pac:

Cracking knuckles or other joints does not result in arthritis. Doctor Donald Unger cracked the knuckles of his left hand for 50 years while he didn't with this right hand. He concluded that there were no ill-effects of cracking knuckles. And he won the damn Ig Nobel Prize for it too.
