    hi folks,

one of my friends is in a quandary, and after looking around the net, i still haven't found the precise answer.

he wants to buy a laptop on Ebay, but the item will be shipped from Canada. Does anybody know the situation as regards taxes when the item comes here, eg import tax or any other hidden costs that may occur??

Cheers for the help in advance.

You will be liable for Irish VAT (21%?) on the laptop.

Based on UK custom laws, there is no custom.import duty applicable to laptops iirc.

    thanks for the speedy response.

so would you recommend shop buying instead to save the hassle and possibly more hidden charges??

a friend of mine got stung for €40 from FedEx for importing sunglasses, so i presume couriers will have another charge for going through customs??
