Practical, reliable hatchback/liftback for under 2k?

Been looking at Skoda Octavia 1.6s and Mazda 323 1.5s.
Any other suggestions?

There are a few well priced Mk2 Mondeo 1.6s around. Any experience of these?

Most 323s in Ireland are the 1.3 saloon which isn't much good to me.
Haven't found the right Skoda yet so I'm still open to other possibilities.

Octavia?? Mondeo?? Is it a Hatchback or Saloon or Liftback you are looking for?

Sorry not being smart its just your title suggests its hatchback.

323f is very reliable, you should be able to get a newer 1.6 for your budget. Don't bother with 1.3 SOHC engine. GLX model the way to go, some have optional sunroof as well a

I should have mentioned before the max engine size should be 1.6.

I'm starting to consider the Focus. Although they're so common I find the prospect of owning one a little depressing.

Could never bring myself to own a Corolla of that generation.

The 323 1.3 seems pointless considering it's a 1324cc engine and the 1.5 is a 1498.
There must have been a substantial premium on the 1.5 new since nearly every 323 out there is a feckin' 1.3!
On paper the 1.6 doesn't seem any better than the 1.5...

It's got 10 hp more. We've had both and 1.6 much more
flexible and grunty
