2003 VW Polo 1.4 automatic petrol engine noise

    Hey,

The ma decided to learn to drive recently but wanted an automatic so they eventually went for a 2003 VW Polo 1.4 automatic petrol. Now the car itself is clean and tidy inside and drives reasonable well etc but there is a rather loud rattle from the engine.

On accelleration the engine sounds more like a diesel than a petrol. I have googled for possible explanations but only found one suggesting a lose engine cover and another vague response about bearings or some such.

Anyway, I was just wondering has anyone had any similar experiences with Polo's of this generation and any possible suggestions as to what might be causing the noise.

    Thanks,
    Pyridine

Check the oil, even if oil sensor says it's alright.

I posted in another thread that my friend's polo auto (2002) used to use oil heavily.

Very important to check this as any use without oil would cause engine damage.

(ah here it is http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=66816744&postcount=10 )

Anyway it's a lovely car so hope she gets it sorted

and as an aside - as I said in the other thread - do the test in an auto car and you'll only be able to drive auto (not a problem if that's all she'll ever want to drive)

I'll check the oil later! :)

Yeah she knows that she'll be stuck on the auto if she does her test in it. Not a problem once the polo holds up!! :D

My 03 polo auto drinks oil like a mad thing, mileage is low and it's not driven hard, but that's the way she is.
The engine has never been the smoothest of things in the world, so it might just be that...

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Can you be more specific than 'rattle'? Have you listened to the engine with the bonnet up while someone revs the engine?

    Hey,

So I checked the oil level. It's fine.

As for the "rattle", the only way I could describe it is when you accelerate it sounds a little like a cross between a diesel and an old VW Beetle!!

It's not as noisy when the engine heats up but it's still noticable.

I wonder if it has hydraulic tappets fitted, if so it could be a possibility that these are making the racket. The sound would most probably be coming from the top of the engine if they are.
