Heads up: the Inaugural SportAccord World Combat Games is starting today. If this goes well its planned to be held every four years.

    http://www.worldcombatgames.com/en/
The new martial arts initiative will list 13 Combat Sports and Martial Arts, both Olympic and non-Olympic such as Aikido, Boxing, Judo, Ju-Jitsu, Karate, Kendo, Kickboxing, Muaythai, Sambo, Sumo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, and Wushu. There will be competitions for both males and females and with weigh-ins for the pertinent sports.

During the eight days of competition the Combat Games will also gather 1108 athletes contending for 136 gold medals. There will also be a rich cultural program depicting the traditions of the sports involved and their social contributions.

Many sport Ambassadors will be involved also such as Jet Li, Don "the Dragon" Wilson, Gam Gavintra Photijak and Wrestling Olympic Champion Rulon Gardner.

Each of the sports will have 80 top athletes competing and the qualifications will be set up according to their relative international sports federations.

The Combat Games will be held in many of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games original venues: National Indoor Stadium (gymnastics, trampoline, handball and wheelchair basketball finals), China Agricultural University Gymnasium (wrestling), Beijing Science and Technology Stadium (judo, taekwondo, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby), and the Beijing University Students’ Gymnasium (judo, taekwondo training venues).

Only ones I'm aware of are Jay Daniels, Jason Doyle, Mark McDermot, Robbie McMenamy in Semi Contact Kickboxing. They qualified through the WAKO World Kickboxing Championships in 2009.

I wish this kind of thing got some media coverage here, it's not often we do well internationally in martial arts and this seems like a really big event to win in.

Internationally we actually do exceptionally well in Martial Arts, its just something which is ignored by the media.

so true and from a kickboxing perspective its only going to get better. With the huge recent increase in kids competing at the various open tournaments combined with the increase in experienced quality coaches the future is bright.

Just a follow on from this discussion, and from a Judo perspective..

There was a discussion re. Irish Judo in the Beijing Olmypics (or lack off) and some history was posted up HERE.

And I know Irish BJJ have been scoring with some great successes internationally too.

it has to be remembered that the 2 countrys that got the most medals at the combat games were china and russia, all the membes of there teams are full time professional and get paid buy the goverments, in the case of sambo a russian team member gets 40,000 euros a year just for bring on the national team, the also get a bonus for winning international titles, if the irish goverment gave half the money to martial arts that the give to running, hurdling or cycling,, martial arts would bring home a lot more medals than the rest, look what boxing has done in the last few years since the have been properly supported by the goverment...

And Pat Hickey's advice to the government after the Beijing Olympics reflects this exactly.

He more or less said that we're wasting out time and money funding 'track and field' as we're never realistically medal in this area, whereas our Judo and TKD players were very likely to medal if we spent money in those area's.

Good point Maki, and exactly WHY the track and field....flutes along with John Tracy:rolleyes: would LOVE to see Pat Hicky removed.

How come Ireland wasn't better represented at this event? Did the national bodies just not know about this until it was too late?

Further to that, he also suggested that the best our 'track & field' athletes could realistically achieve at Olympic level are personal bests!.

people had to qualify for the combat games just like the olympic games buy placing very highly at various world championships, the medals they gave out even had the olympic rings on them, this was a games run under the authority of the olympic council...
there are going to be major changes with the olympics for all combat sports over the next 4 years...

Irish standards for track and field and considerably higher than Olympic standard. Irish boxers and track and field athletes who reach those standards get to go to the Olympics. Have those standards been met by Judo or TKD competitiors? If they have then they would get to go.

Another reason Judo and TKD dont get more funding is down to governing issues. Amateur boxing, equestrian or track and field dont have the same issues and speak with one voice when looking for funding. Sport in general in this country is criminally underfunded but then again so is healthcare, education and basic infastastructure.
