im getting really fed up now, all i want to do is record some syths etc but when i load a synth and press a key to triger a sound it plays but then i would play it again and it would hold out for ages aswell like it had loads of renascence or decay i have tried turning down the decay etc but its still happening

and also when i plat a note , when i lift my finger from the note another note play after it , like a rebound , i dont know how to explain it , but is really p*ssing me off, looking at videos on youtube and it all seems so simple but i just cant record synths with out these problems happening all the time :mad::mad::mad:

Check the modulation wheel on your synth is down

What, and go with your heart?? :p

Could it be a problem with latency? Does the same thing happen with all instruments or just the synths?

If you are using a keyboard with standard midi in/out rather than a usb controller you need to make sure the keyboard is set to "local off".
If you do not do this a midi loop is created that can cause the problems you are having.
If you are not using a midi I/O keyboard with normal midi cables disregard this.

Ahh hung midi notes.. Aren't they great.

Prolly the local off thing or a drivers thing for the MIDI interface... Not Logic I would imagine.

i read that article and did not help ??
midi hung notes can they not be stopped ?

erm, they can be but there's all sorts of circumstances in any midi system where a note-off message won't be sent (and hence a stuck note occurs). But the local-off thingy trackmix mentioned looks like it would do the trick.

    Logic is dumping midi messages.

When you release the key your keyboard should send a note off message. DAW's being busy have a habit of ignoring midi messages.

Freeze down your tracks - your computer can only handle so much at once and some synths may be programmed very inefficiently so they can't be played live.

but i cant even have one simple little instrument open on its own with out this happening , i dont have loads of synth open in one window atall

the way people are going on about this problem i have now , im regretting getting logic because i thought it would be as simple as just opening a vst and playing it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Rockshamrover

AVA, are you trying to record the synth or just play it?

Do you gave cycle mode on (the green bar at the top of the screen?) You could be just looping back on yourself.

    What synth is it?

dood, it's not logic. All DAWs suffer from issues like this, especially if you don't turn local off.

    That's a keyboard nit a DAW thing.

Google your keyboard's make and model and the phrase 'local off'...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,672 ✭✭✭seannash

as youve probably figured out its your controller not logic.

have you tried turning off the controller, maybe resetting it if it has a reset switch

    What synth again?

That message, as well as everyone on the board, is telling you that the problem is related to your MIDI controller and nothing to do with Logic.

I realise how annoying problems like this can be, believe me.
However sometimes you need to take a few deep breaths, relax and re read the information already given to you.
You've convinced yourself, illogically (ironically!!), that Logic is the problem and you wont solve this issue by thinking like that.

cheers for getting back , iv read up on this "local" issue and i cant seem to resolve it

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,344 ✭✭✭fitz

Try hooking the controller up via USB.
I've an M-Audio Axiom that I use via USB, and never had any of the above issues.
Tbh, I think Midi's a bit redundant these days...

tats what iv been doing from the atart i have been connecting it by usb??

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

, i understand what the problems is but i do not have a clue how to fix it with my keyboard!!1this is all im getting when i read up on what my problem is , there is no artcile on how fix fix this with logic with my keyboard
MIDI Channel Message that sets whether your keyboard is going to trigger its internal sounds (Local ON) or not (Local OFF). This is a vital parameter to have control over in order to avoid loops and double-triggers when your keyboard is part of a larger, computer-involving rig of equipment.

I forgot to check this thread to see if you got sorted.
If your controller is USB (ie does not use 5 pin MIDI cables) local off is not relevant to the problem. It could be a RAM problem if you have low RAM and are trying to use a resource heavy instrument.
    Things to try (in order).

    1. Open Audio Midi setup (Applications>utilities) and see what's there in the MIDI window. If you see midi devices that you don't have connected, select and delete them then rescan MIDI.

    2. In logic go to preferences>audio and select built in output as the audio driver and see if the problem is still there. If it works ok your interface driver is faulty. Download and (re)install the latest version.

    3. Try the "caps lock" keyboard to see if the problem is still there. If it is then your controller is not the issue.

4.In Logic go to settings>MIDI and select the "input filter" tab.
Tick program change, control changes, aftertouch, polyphonic aftertouch and sysex.
This will filter out all the cr@p getting to sent to logic. Sometimes aftertouch can be a problem.

5.Close Logic then navigate (in finder) to your home folder>library>preferences and find the file called "com.apple.logic.pro.plist" and drag it to your desktop.
This is your preferences for logic and may be corrupt.
Next time you start logic it will rebuild a default preference file.
If you have changed any preferences or key commands from the default you will have to change them again. The file on your desktop is a backup of your preferences if you need it later.

    6. Throw logic out of the window:p

    7. Come to the realization that Protools was actually quite good.:D

    Sorry couldn't resist it.

AVA follow steps 1-5 to the letter and report back.

Snow Leopard has ultilities as it's own folder in the dock.
    It looks like this

    Utilities-Folder.jpg

The audio midi set up icon looks like

You're gonna need to start making an effort yourself if you want to solve this.
