I was just wondering how would you go about becoming a guard or prison officer in the uk. I cant apply over here due to not having completed my leaving certificate and have heard that uk entry requirements are not as high as here. Any help will be much appreciated .

hey, if you google prison officer uk it brings up the website for applying, the major stumbling block that pops up is that you need to be resident in the uk for 3 yrs before you can apply
    hope that helps

    Actually the paragraph reads:

"For most posts within the Prison Service there is no residency requirement. However, some posts do require a national security vetting level and for these posts applicants should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for three years prior to their application."

So it should not be a problem in most cases. Furthermore the next paragraph goes on:

"In certain circumstances it may be possible to obtain the necessary security clearance for applicants who do not meet the residency requirements. However, this would need to be considered on an individual basis."

I can't find the reference right now, but there are special rules for Irish/UK citizens when it comes to government jobs that have residency rules - basically it is assumed you meet them by virtue of your citizenship.

    Good luck with that,

    Jim

You should be able to find all the details you are look for on The HM Prison Service site.

However, you should be aware that these are the minimum requirements and given the current economic situation the actual standards of candidates accepted will be higher, most likely leaving certificate level.....

    Good luck with that,

    Jim
