I don't know if there are rules on commenting on cases like this but I'm only posting what's freely available in the media.

Pretoria - Lawyers of Bees Roux, who was arrested in connection with the death of a Tshwane metro policeman in Pretoria on Friday, were trying to persuade authorities to bring him before court on Friday.

The reason being that if they can achieve this they might be able to bring a bail application immediately.

If however he is only brought to court Monday - or even Tuesday with State having 48 hours to do so, weekends don't count - he could end up spending a while in custody.

In addition the state may be forced to oppose bail and seek 7-14 days to prepare for that application.

It will all depend on the approach of the state coupled to the Magistrate's attitude whether he is released early or not.

According to the player's attorney Ernst Serfontein: "We are trying to arrange for him to appear in court. He is still in custody."

Captain Katlego Mogale, police spokesperson, said that he was arrested after police received a complaint of assault. Earlier police spokesman Colonel Eugene Opperman confirmed that a case of murder had been opened but would give no further details.

Mogale told News24 that the player was still on top of the Metro cop when police arrived on the scene.

Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesperson, said that paramedics found the critically injured police officer, who is yet to be identified, lying in the middle of Schoeman Street where he died moments later of extensive injuries.

The Blue Bulls rugby franchise has released a statement on Friday wherein it acknowledges that it is aware of the alleged involvement of a player in an incident involving a policeman who died.

Issued by Ian Schwartz, part of the union's media relations team, it said: "We do not have any factual information at this stage, but have been informed that the policeman passed away. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the relatives of the deceased. We are not in a position to make any further comments in this regard."

Assume there's far more to this than we've heard. Horrible story in general though.

Seems he's essentially admitted he beat the policeman, but says he was acting in self defence as the policeman was trying to steal his car.

The other version is the policeman found Roux driving drunk, tried to drive him home in his own car (which would have been odd as it involved leaving his police car behind), Roux was smashed drunk, decided he was being robbed, and beat the police man to death. This was apparently witnessed by two security guards.

It's also turned out Roux's credit card was used in a McDonald's while he was in custody shortly after his arrest. Seems a strange case.
