apologises for the silly questions, im just an iphone 4 newbie...

    1) if you leave skype in an active-signed_in status and/or web pages open in safari does that affect the battery duration?

    2) which tricks or settings would you suggest in order to extend the battery duration to the longest possible?

    many thanks

Yeah that effects the battery, Tricks or setting depends on person to person but here is what i do and i have the best battery life i ever had and that's with power use.

    Notification- OFF
    Location service -OFF
3G OFFwhen on long calls (over 20 minutes or so)
Wifi -OFF when not at home
    Data Roaming -OFF
Mail- Manual do check them every 10-15 minutes anyway
    Bluetooth -OFF
    Brightness about 45%

I always close the apps from Multitasking bar as soon i am finish so no apps running at any time. I am very heavy user and easily get the day and half out of it. here is screenshot for comparison..

Can someone explain exactly what data roaming means/does? I'm a little confused over what it does.

Data Roaming is a toggle switch to avoid unwanted data charges when abroad, Some people are confusing it on three that you need to have that ON to access Edge, i always leave that to off and Edge is working fine and battery life is much better.

You need to confirm that with O2, You can use the data over there no problem but i am not sure about charges, I think 50 Mb a day only applies in Republic.
I would also edit APN to avoid any sort of data, I have read lots of horror stories.

I am not sure but i think o2 doesn't allow 50 Mb for 99C, i think they charge 4.99€ for 1 MB or something, you need to confirm with them.
Three allows data roaming with 3like home.

Here is a link i found.
    http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Explore+Services/Services/Travelling+Abroad/Tariff+Information/United+Kingdom/speakeasy
    4.96€ per Mb OUCH....

... and also how the above works and where the multitasking bar is exactly in order to avoid letting apps running in the backround?

sorry i did not find the previous thread!

    bit confused though...

on my low multitasking bar i only have the phone, mail, safari and messages icons and when i push and hold any icon they just shake without any red “-” symbol to appear.

The same happens for any icon apps which i installed after buying the phone... does this mean that i don't have anything running in the background then??

Press the Home button twice, that will take you to the Running apps and then you can close from there.

Sorry i should have been clear in my first post.
