My dad reacted oddly to the news of his visit :/ "Well of course he's the man for the job, he's a communist himself. Rabble" "Oh. Yes. We need to have dialog with the communists. Right."

Obviously I disagree. North Korea is diametrically oppossed to us, sure, but we need to maintain a dialog.

Jimmy gets prisioner freed from Korean prison. Makes a change from traditional American gunboat diplomacy. I always felt that Jimmy Carter had a fantastic understanding of international politics. Of course the typical red neck racist american never appreciated this.

While I'm sure everybody is glad the man is free but you're coming across as a real asshole with your comments.

This wasn't Carter's idea. The North Koreans had agreed with the US Government to release Gomes, but only if Carter came to get him.

Sometimes I wonder if idiots like those shouldn't be let be. These incidents affect the official government policy and allow additional un-necessary bargaining chips, and they'll keep doing it as long as they think that an ex-President will take the time out of his day to swoop in and collect them.

be a nice bit of internal propoganda for the north korean government too you'd imagine

'and here is former president US president Jimmy Carter paying tribute to our great and glorious leader'

I can't exactly see George Bush II going on a diplomatic mission to arrange the release of prisoners

And there was no agreement with the US government, they were happy to let Gomes rot.

Its obvious the threadstarter is looking for a confrontation and not about the guy getting released.

So why give him the satisfaction?

McDougal, it's blatantly inflammatory to come on the US Politics board with the sort of sweeping generalisation you did in the your opening post. Don't do it again. JohnMc1, don't retaliate.

Sure he's probably still president according to them. :pac:

Can you elaborate on this? What has it got to do with the topic and in a country of nearly 300 million people from almost every existing ethnic background in 50 uniquely (ish) cultured states, what do you define as typical?

I think it's fair to say that Americans generally approve of a gung-ho foreign policy

There are a couple of odd folk on here, just turn up the squelch a bit and the signal/noise ratio should improve.

Gomes had no business going to North Korea in the first place. Frankly, if he were left to rot, it would be his own fault - the US State department is very clear about the risks of travel to North Korea and the NK-China border area. Consular assistance isn't that great in countries where the US has good diplomatic relations, so I wouldn't take my chances where there are poor or no relations at all. And as Manic Moran noted, these kinds of misadventures are a drain on diplomatic resources.

Americans elect Republicans when they are insecure about foreign policy (Which to them is an indistinguishable blob - european socialists, Islam and Africa - all of whom presumably want to kill Americans) and elect Democrats when they want the state to play a greater role in the economy and take care of things like health care or education.

American foreign policy is ultimately aimed at appeasing demagogues who pander to the mass ignorance of the average American voter of anything outside their own country.

What was he thinking by illegally entering North Korea ? Surely he knew what was going to happen.

I always felt Jimmy Carter got a bad rep, he had some terrible luck in his presidency but I always thought he came across as a decent skin.

Yes, I know that and live with that.

What does that have to do with my post?

So what exactly have North Korea learned?

Slick Willie and Jimmy will turn up cap in hand to beg for the return of their citizens whenever North Korea decides to hold them hostage.

The North Koreans must be delighted to have America kow-towing in front of them.

This is a thread about Jimmy Carter going to North Korea to free an American hostage, hence the comment.
Bill Clinton did the same a while ago.
    So it is relevant.
