Was out golfing a few days ago with a few friends and as we were playing i noticed that two of the bunkers i went into were full of footprints etc. As we were playing we caught up to a group of around 5 young lads out playing. They didn't seem to be doing anything out of the way but i was thinking afterwards, should i have said something to them about proper ettiquitte regarding bunkers? I wasn't sure if it was them or not so i didn't. Also there was another person i knew behind me and i was afraid if he went into a bunker that wasn't raked he'd think it was me etc...

    Opinions?

How do you know it was them?

Even if it was them, as juniors, it's the clubs responsibility to introduce them to the rules, regulations and etiquette of the game.

Why were you contemplating approaching them so?

Why were you contemplating approaching them so?

Obviously because they were the group directly in front of us and hence the most likely to have not raked the bunkers.

    Logic Fail there Im afraid.
By that sense the guy behind you should blame you. And the guy behind him blames him.
Unless you see it you have no options Im afraid. They could have been there since the night before for all you know

Of course. But i fully raked the two bunkers that i was in. I would hope that most others would do the same.

Why consider picking on a group of young lads playing in front of you? Agree with bo on this one.

Time would be better spent advising your club on the need to inform all members and visitors to rake, repair, etc

I'd be more inclined to politely mention to someone in front regarding pitch marks unrepaired on greens. At least you know that the people in front played the greens. the guys in front dont have to have made the pitch marks, but if you're find lots of unrepaired ones, you could mention to them that it wouldn't do any harm to keep any eye out for unrepaired pitchmarks, and repair the odd one. Some people are better at saying things like this in a freindly, non confrontational way. I dont think there is any problem in doing this, but if you feel that you cant do it in a nice way, prob better to say nothing.

One thing happened me recently which I regret not reacting to differently. I played my drive, hooked the neck off it, it finished in the greenside bunker of another hole. I didn't react quick enough to call fore, trees in the way so no clear/easy view, and to be honest was also fed up with the shot, so did not watch too closely.

So when I get up to the green there's an auld fella coming out of the bunker having just played. I apologised profusely as I approached. He was grumpy and telling me I should have shouted fore. I told him that he's aboslutely right, I'm in the wrong and I'm sorry. Bending over backwards. The ball had only trickled in to the front edge, but I was wrong and left him in no doubt of my contrition, despite his continued narkiness.

So yer man, having played his bunker shot from the up-slope, deep into the bunker, walks out and doesnt even think of raking it. His ball was over the other side, nowhere near mine, so it wasn't a case of him expecting me to do it. I SOOO wish I had asked him was he not going to rake the bunker. Deep regrets!!

It's proper ettiquite to rake a bunker. I hardly think the poster needs to "grow up" for expecting someone to follow expected guidelines.

You don't have to be old to be grumpy

I'm not too bothered if people are grumpy. Your's is a silly remark. If he's fit enough to play golf, he's fit enough to respect etiquette. My issue was that he was giving me dogs abuse about not doing something I should have done, then walses out of the bunker leaving it in a state. Not good enough. Maybe my point was to complicated for you to grasp though.

Just coming back to this now. I agree that he should have raked the bunker but having "Deep regrets" for not saying anything seems a little over the top.

I understand your point alright but had to read it a few times...

You wouldn't be the first person to suggest what I type is not too clear. "Deep regrets" a bit strong, just the kinda thing one wishes one had dealt with differently when playing a moment back again in your head.
