i recently got a quote from a reptual insurance company for my renewal it was 840 last year they quoted me 1318 this year

    jump of over 50%

so i rang the same company looking for a first time quote with exactly the same credentials except the name and it was 270 cheaper

What the hell is going on here ????

    1. Insurance is rising a lot over the last year or two.
    2. I questioned that with an insurance company previously and was told "you're no longer a new customer". They were right, I immediately became an ex-customer.

Me too - I'm getting quotes at the moment and the difference between the highest and lowest quotes at the moment is over €700 - and that's for similar benefits. If I include all quotes (some with extra benefits) the difference is over €900. Just shop around, but keep things like NCB stepback, windscreen cover, drive other cars etc in mind.

Happens all the time, and in all areas of life. Shop around & negotiate for the best price.

Yes but when same company are giving higher quotes to existing claim free customers, you really have to wonder. Same thing happened me last year.

I cost them nothing. One windscreen ever. Maybe their stats people figure someone who has not had a crash lately is due one very soon on average:D

I don't think they're thinking that deeply about it. I'd imagine they're more working under the assumption that a lot of people are lazy and don't change insurance company annually. So they draw you in with a cheaper offer as a new customer, then put the price up the next year.

Up until a few years ago, changing your insurer was a real hassle - you'd get a renewal notice about 2 days before the due date, and if you wanted to change insurer you'd have to get all your quotes (not as simple without the internet) and try and get a copy of your NCB certificate from the existing crowd and get it to the new crowd in time.

More recent legislation means that you now get your renewal notice at least a month in advance of the date, and your NCB cert automatically comes with it. Combine that with internet quotes and it's a lot easier to change insurer every year if you want to. In the space of about 40 minutes earlier today I got 9 different quotes. Once upon a time I could have been on the phone to just one company during that time, listening to bloody Greensleeves. Unfortunately some insurance companies have the "old" mindset, and punish people for staying with them.

If an insurance company tried to increase my policy by 50% it would be the last conversation I would ever have with them. If you got insurance for 840 last year then barring the usual reasons for an increase I see no reason why you wouldnt get a similar quote from another company this year.

With insurance renewals it always pays to shop around. (unless you drive an Integra of course in which case you end up with a large phone bill only to be told your car is the devil and they wouldnt touch you with a 40 foot barge poll...!)

Quinn are notorious for oddities when being quoted

I got a €100 lower quote when I changed the cars value form €2k to €3k,
actually just checked, even if you change the value to €2001 it goes down by €100

I changed some details before on an online quote to see if anything else made a big difference,
it went down by around €200 if I changed my details to married or even common law spouse

No other online quotes I've tried make any difference in price with regards to marital status.

I'm changing to FBD this year, got a quote of €654 tpft compared to €978 from quinn and €1500 from axa

Quinn are notorious for this. Last year, it was grand, they just gave me 9better than) the 'new customer' price. This year they wouldn't do that though, so I just let it lapse by an hour and became a new customer again :)

I put my occupation down as "chicken sexer" once to see if it affected the price of the quote but alas it didnt... :(
