I was wondering if this was possible. Im looking to connect the phone to the house wifi and then connect my laptop through the phone as a wifi hub. I can connect through the hub to get 3g but i cant seem to get it to connect to wifi aswell... is this possible... is there an app.

I know this sounds ridiculous but trust me... its a solution to a couple of problems... including, an ancient wifi adapter, new router, broken usbs and distance from wifi connection to sitting room in my parents house

    cheers

Oh and its a HTC desire... if that makes a difference

I don't think so. What you are trying to do, if I understand what you are saying, sounds like a recipe for IP conflicts, not to mind not being possible. I would suggest getting a wifi (gig/N) router which will have a better range than the older B/G type. Another solution, more expensive, would be to get a pair a Home-plugs which would allow Internet to travel around the house via ESB sockets.

What you are asking seems slightly bizarre in trying to turn the phone into a wifi repeater. So you'd have top place the phone somewhere half way between the house router and your laptop.
You are unlikely to get an app that will act like that.
The simplest solution is to get some telephone extension cable and move the wifi router somewhere that would make it more centrally accessible

well the main problem is the wifi in my own house... My ten year old laptop (that I love dearly... and use daily) has a wifi card that is basically incompatible with an awful lot of routers.

What I was looking to do is essentially use the phone as a translator of wifi signals. The Phone can connect to wifi signals my laptop cant and my laptop can connect to the phone hub.

I had a dongle until recently but I finally damaged the last usb. I can tether the phone but I slight breeze disconnects the phone (this is extremely frustrating)

Is what Im thinking of completely impossible? I'm struggling to think why. Kesey mentioned IP conflicts... Im not sure how this would occur.

    Cheers

PS The wifi repeater thing would just be an added bonus

We were testing the wifi hotspot today at work on the HTC Desire and turning on the hotspot turns off the wifi connection (as you might expect) so looks like you can't do what you're after.

101001, are you willing to spend a few euros to do the job properly? We need some info to make suggestions.

You say you have a new router. Which model is it? Once we know that we might be able to suggest a couple of reasonable options to get you sorted.
