Hi, I've searched around and despite seeing a couple of comments suggesting this is possible I couldn't find details.

Does anyone know if I can use my iphone 4 (contract bill pay 40 euro a month) to send internet to my ipad/laptop? If so is there an extra tethering charge or does it just use my data allowance?

Im guessing connecting to a laptop is easier - for connecting to ipad does anyone know whether I have to hack both the ipad and the iphone or just one of them and which app do I need?

    Cheers!!!

Ps. if anyone says 3 charges extra for tethering Im going to die because I left o2 thinking they charged extra for tethering and found out too late that they dont. (I was in a live-help chat on o2 and was assured that it costs extra - which it actually doesnt :()

You could jailbreak your iphone though and use it as a WiFi hotspot for the iPad. It's a little odd that Apple didn't think of that - maybe they did, and want people to fork out for the 3G iPad.

I think more likely that we in Europe are suffering the shortcomings of American networks (At&T) because we are using an American phone. AT&T didn't ever want the tethering.

You need to jailbreak it then buy Mywi ($19.99) from Cydia. We worth it. I'm on the same plan as you and have tethered quite a bit from my iPhone free of charge and still have loads of data left.

Cheers for that - how long have you been tethering (just don't want any nasty bill surprises)?

From Friday to Sunday I tethered an iPad AND an iPhone for a few hours each day and night including 2 train journeys to and from Galway and I still have 1.2 of my 2gb left. With Planet 3 you can check what you've left so you don't go over your allowance.

No doubt plugged into the power points agreeably furnished by Iarnród Eireann?

Indeed. Almost, almost worth the fare!
