Rules: Removing rake in bunker using club

I was playing in a comp yesterday and found my ball in a deepish bunker. Before I entered the bunker I went around to where the rake lay and was about to use my sand wedge to lift if out of the bunker, as it was too deep there to take it by hand. I stopped myself doing it as I wondered would that be deemed grounding the club. Am I right, even if I didn't actually touch the sand, just the shaft of the rake?

You wouldn't be grounding your club.

However you shouldn't remove the rake with your club as you may end up dragging the rake through the sand (even slightly would be enough)....some smart Alec would claim that you were testing the surface.

Instead you should lift the rake straight up off the sand.

Ya..you could be deemed to be testing the sand and would incur a penalty
