ripping from dvds

I have a load of stuff I copied from tv onto dvd-r and dvd-rw. Is it possible to rip from these onto my laptop as avi files or similiar so I can store on external hardrives rather than storing on dvd. I don't seem to have any software on my latop at the minute that will do this. Does anyone know of any?
