I've just been looking at the trail du mont blanc web site for the criteria needed to enter in 2011. It said you need to earn 5 points from a maximum of two races. I've got 3 points from a race I did in Switzerland. I am wondering is there any way I can earn the other 2 points I need in a race in Ireland???

    Qualifying races are online:

Mourne Way Ultra Marathon Trail Ireland 2010 84km 2860m+ 2
    THE WICKLOW ROUND Trail Ireland 2009 100km 6000m+ 3
    ULTRA CELTIC RUN Trail Ireland 2009 160km 4000m+ 4
    Ultra Celtique Run Raid Ireland 2010 160km 3800m+ 4

    http://www.ultratrailmb.com/page/17/Qualifying_races.html

Could be worth going across the water for some. I've a vague plan to do this in 2012, next year run one of the qualifying races.

2010 race called off just after the race start.

One of our very own boardsies was one of the runners, so disappointing for them.

I think the Wicklow way ultra race (50k or so) got 1 qualifying point.

I really feel for them. Its not something you can do casually - most people will have spent the previous year building up to it.

Some more information on this web site:

It was won by Jez Bragg. Hopefully you'll get better weather next year.

Race report should be worth a read if any of his previous events are anything to go by:

Scratch the above post. Upon reading the UTMP site http://www.ultratrailmb.com/page/19/2011_enrolment.html it appears that registration commences between the end of December 2010 and mid-January 2011 with a EUR 50 deposit. Sorted..

Draw for the 2011 race just made this evening.

Happy days they pulled my name out of the draw. I'm one jammy f€cker :D

Best of luck to any other Boardies who stuck their name into the hat.

Well done lads! Really want to see what Enduro can do on it! I remember Aisling Coppinger saying that most of the continental competitors had very warm gear whereas she had very lightweight stuff which wasn't *really* enough.

Are you guys going to bring walking poles? I've seen some of the top guys using them (which surprised me).

I'll be comfortably holding up the back of the field with my trusty Fizan Compact poles (only 158g per pole so pretty light). Used them loads of times before for long ascents or when really knackered descending. Otherwise fold them down and attach to rucksack.

This page gives an idea of the depth of quality in the field. Defo one for the future.

Best of luck with it lads.

some quality in that field alright!

Gohard, I haven't really thought too much about the race yet. I was assuming I wouldn't get in this year! It's all working through my head right now.

Generally I hate poles, even in adventure races (the real ones!!!) where half the world uses them on the trekking sections. I could see where something like nordic walking poles might be useful though.
